Hi chriswmn ,

Welcome to the Community.

To toggle the video on to an external monitor please connect the monitor to the VGA port of the system and then press Win key and P key simultaneously. If you are able to get the video on the external monitor that means it is a LCD failure else it would be a bad motherboard (video card).

Please try the above steps to toggle the video and reply with the outcome so that I can assist you further.

Thank you

Well this time I didn't even have to push anything.  As soon as I plugged the monitor into the laptop the picture popped up on the monitor.

Hi chriswmn,

Welcome to the Community.

As you are able to see the video on the external monitor when connected to the system that means the issue is with the LCD of the portable. It would require repairs in this case. I would request you to please provide me the service tag of the system in a private message by adding me as a friend so that I can check the warranty type and assist you further.

Thank you

Hi Ravi,

My son's laptop have the same problem as above. He already send it to the repair shop (not Dell Repair) and try to replace it with various LCD, but still haven't fix the problem.

My son is in the Manila (Makati City Area), Philippines with his laptop and I am in Singapore and couldn't help him.

Where in the Philippines he can send his Dell Inspiron N4010 for repair?

Also his unit is out of warranty

You're prompt response is really appreciated.

Thank You

Hi pKaplog89,

There is a possibility that some other component of the system may be causing this issue. Please let me know the status of the power light on the system. Also, try connecting the system to an external monitor to check if the external monitor works fine. You may also run the LCD BIST diagnostics on the system:

  • Power off the system completely.
  • Press and hold 'D' key on the keyboard and press the power button to initiate the LCD BIST diagnostics; make sure you release both simultaneously to turn on the laptop.
  • Let me know if you see the color bars while running the diagnostics.

Keep me posted. Please reply in case you have any further questions.

Hi Vikram M,

We already tried the instruction you posted and only show White, Yellow, Pink, Blue Green screen and not a bar as you said. The laptop turns the power on but it shows black screen.
We also connect the laptop to external monitor and works fine, we can browse internet and open some programs.

Please reply to my personal email add <ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy>

and copy to my son's email add <ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy>

Thanks & Regards

My daughter also has a Dell N4010 and the display appears to have failed (white screen with blue faded stripes)  We were on a chat support that walked us through the same diagnostics (remove from AC power, remove battery, hold power button for 20-30 seconds) then hold D key and power, then hold Fn and Power on.  Screen came on white, then beeping tones but the screen stayed white).  That chat support person suggested calling out of warranty support (I tried, but it appears the out of warranty support line is staffed only during normal business hours, so won't be able to talk with them until Monday).

Seeing this thread, I connected an external monitor and the correct images appear on the external monitor, which appears to narrow down the problem to the laptop display.  Has anyone been quoted what the cost of the display repair (replace?)?  Seems like a number of N4010 displays are failing and I hope the cost to repair is reasonable.

Hi pKaplog89,

I appreciate your efforts. The result of the troubleshooting concludes that either the LCD cable or the LCD needs replacement. Your son can contact Dell Sales (Philippines) at +604 633 1182 or +632 706 8001 to order the LCD cable and replace it. If the issue still persists after the LCD cable replacement, he can purchase the LCD and get it replaced which should fix the issue.

Please reply in case you have any further questions.

Hi rbrusuelas,

It can either be an issue with the LCD cable or LCD. I believe you are in United States. I will recommend you to purchase the LCD cable from Dell Sales department at 1-800-357-3355 (United States) and get it replaced by a local technician. If the issue still persists, you can purchase the LCD and get it replaced.

If the system was purchased outside United States, log on to www.support.dell.com and click on 'Contact us' to get the contact number of the appropriate sales department depending on your region.

Please reply in case you have any further questions.
