Hi DietDoc,
You would need a Mini-Display Port to VGA Adaptor to connect an external monitor to your system.

I am using a USB 3.0 hub with a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter. Running two monitors.

are you going from usb3.0 into the hub? Which hub do you have?

I have a thunderbolt to HDMI connector but this does not seem to work tried 3 different external monitors - by mini display port do you mean this port
seemd lots of dell users have problems with external monitors!!
