I am curious what you had the Optimus settings when you tested with the Windows Experience Index.  Did you have Global settings set to high performance or not?  When testing did you have the AC adapter connected or where you using battery? All of these settings can determine if the Nvidia GPU is being used at all, and the notebook is only running the integrated Intel GPU.

Here is a document on Optimus and it gives directions for setting the notebook to globally run at "high performance"

en.community.dell.com/.../19405027.aspx

Selecting a Preferred Graphics Processor

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel

* Select Manage 3D Settings

* Under the Global Settings tab, select High-performance NVIDIA processor

* Click Apply

I do suggest using the Dell driver for the Nvidia GPU version A08 8.17.12.6830.  Version 8.17.12.8577 hasn't been tested by Dell for this system and it certainly could be a problem.

www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

With the Nvidia GPU set as the preferred graphics processor, then the Dell 8.17.12.6830 driver installed  and the AC adapter connected to the notebook  please run the Windows Experience Index again and report back here with your findings.

This reply is in response to a posting by "DELL-Terry B" dated 04-03-2012 10:12 AM.

No idea, I just used the computer out of the box as I wrongly assumed that Dell knew how to setup their computers.

>Version 8.17.12.8577 hasn't been tested by Dell for this system and it certainly could be a problem.

If you work for Dell then you should be aware that the current recommended Dell-Driver in Video_Nvidia_W74_A09_Setup_RRN66_ZPE.exe (3/12/2012) is 8.17.12.8577 - check it out on Dell's website on the All files for XPS 15 (L502x) page (www.dell.com/.../cadhs1).  I've only installed Dell provided driver so it indicates a complete lack of QA if "Version 8.17.12.8577 hasn't been tested by Dell".

It seems that the point of your reply is simply to blame the customer and ignore the problems with the Dell XPS L502X with NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M.  This is a disappointing response.

You are correct 8.17.12.8577 is a Dell driver, for XPS notebooks with 3D.  I didn't realize that your system had 3D, I apologize for the confusion.

I still suggest configuring Optimus so that the nVidia GPU is set as the preferred GPU for testing.  It is not set this way by default from the factory.  Otherwise when running the Windows Experience Index the system may default to using the Integrated Intel video.

If you continue to have problems and would like to consider a service please send me a private message with the service tag of the notebook and your name.

>If you continue to have problems

Yes the problems continue and that is why I uninstalled the NVIDIA video driver since the BSOD caused by nvlddmkm.sys is more than a minor annoyance - it is unacceptable for an expensive brand new computer.

I have the same problem,

I just bought a Dell xps L502s with a freedos, I instal Windows 7 and the majority of the drivers.

I don't know how to deal with it (I don't know how the uninstalle the NVIDIA driver or something like that)

Thanks you for your answer

Search on Google for "uninstall the nvidia drivers"

I believe that the problem may be related to an issue with your installation of Windows 7.

I did not find a solution to the BSOD problems on the Dell XPS L502X with NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M other than uninstalling the NVIDIA driver and using the Intel video driver.  However if you still have a warranty then I'd suggest contacting Dell support and seeing if they will do anything.  However they'll probably only re-image the system to the way that it was delivered to you.

Oh, and BTW it's not a BIOS issue (running newest A10), not a driver issue (failure occurs with original driver, latest driver on Dell website, and latest NVidia driver).  Reinstalled Windows 7 and failing game, no difference.  Only thing that immediately fixed this was underclocking the 540M.

From previous searches here and outside forums there seems to be an issue with the 540M graphics.  Some people have had the motherboard replaced, but the only consistent solution seems to be to slow down the clocks a bit with a tweak program like NVidia System Tools (warning - this could void your warranty).

Still waiting for NVidia / Dell to deliver a real fix for this issue (or even acknowledge the issue).

FYI, I sent a message to one of the Dell support reps and got a list of recommendations to try.  IMHO this is a more widespread issue that admitted by Dell and NVidia so far - but to be fair, I will try the suggestions out and report back if any of them solve the flakiness of the L502X / 540M combo.

Dell is a very shrewd company and they are just concerned with the amount of money they make, that is the least I say about Dell.

All laptops of this model have this same fault with that Substitute character removed as per TOU>
nvidia gt540 graphics card.I tried their customer care and they changed my motherboard which just postponed problem until my warranty was over. Then I have to search for the solution on my own.

Finally, I found a solution on a website which was to lower the clock speed of graphics card.So I thought that I can play few more games although at inferior quality due to lowered performance of graphics card and well, this method worked for some time until it started crashing even at lower frequency.

The main problem here is that this issue was addressed to dell years back when this model was launched. No proper solution has been given by dell till this day and I dont think that they will ever do anything about it. We cant make them do anything about it except we can just turn away from Dell for ever..

Hi,

I have only underclocked my CPU Frequency to 600 Mzh and its working fine for now. I have made no changes in the memory clock.
Else, i have limited my CPU (intel i7 mobile 2630QM) to its 80% of the maximum frequency to maintain the overall temperature lower. Now the GPU works at a maximum of 65°C. Before it had stopping working at 72°C
