I figured it out. This model takes a SATA mini-SSD. The standard size SATA SSDs won't fit.

My issue resolved...

I contacted Crucial and they researched this issue and reported back that I need a 7mm drive.

They offered to RMA the drive I had for a 7mm replacement. I agreed and they shipped me a CT256M4SSD1. I've installed it and all is well.

I am very happy with Crucial's response and service! (but disappointed in DELL's lack of response to this post)

It is possible that there could be a certain small object on the side that preventing the SSD to be fully inserted. Be sure to check carefully on that part.

There's no object on the side of the SATA port as far as I know. I tried with two different E5430 laptops and I'm having the same problem. Link to more pics: docs.google.com/open

Hi moah - just wondering how you got on with this - did you fit a mini-SSD in the end? If so what make/model? I presume the problem with the full size ssd was the bracket rather than the drive itself? Could the bracket be adapted - not very warranty friendly though. Interestingly Crucial list this drive as www.crucial.com/.../mpartspecs.aspx compatible

Thanks

Hello digitaldr. I actually ordered a few of the E5430s for my employer. We ended up exchanging all of them for a different model due to the problems with the SSD install, so I never actually tried to put a mini-SSD in there. I got the info from a Dell rep, they told me that the E5430 could be shipped with an SSD if I wanted it, so I asked what model was their SSD , they said it was a Samsung 128GB solid state minicard. I think it's part of the plastic plug on the regular SSDs that prevents it from fully inserting on the E5430, maybe it can be modded, but I think it's not worth the trouble. I contacted Crucial too, before I contacted Dell, they were clueless.

Thanks for the detailed reply moah. I reckon I'll give the minicard a go - after a bit of googling it seems that the samsung is probably a PM830 sata3  - expensive and hard to find - I don't think it's been released to retail. I'll pick up a different brand on Amazon and can always return it if needs be. I wonder if  a SATA 2 one would work ok as my budget is a bit limited and I could cope with the speed hit. On the other hand maybe a should go for a lower capacity sata3 one? Decisions, decisions!

Hi have same problem. But solved to as.

İ am removed Sandisk 128 GB SSD sticker for access screw. Seperate top cover of SSD.

fasten SSD card to bottom cover using hot plastic glue. (at the four corner) install SSD to e5430 its fit fine.

Does anyone know a SSD drive which I can install on the E5430 without modifications? It should be possible as you can also order it with an 128 GB SSD drive (which is too small for me).

Is a mSATA drive the solution?

If the E5430 uses mSATA can we install the 80GB Intel 310 mSATA SSD?

www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

I'd like to buy a couple of dozen E5430's for work, but not until I know that we can fit them with SSD drives.

This is a correct statement.  But I'll say that the underlying problem is due to a notch in the  plastic case next to the SATA connectors.  The notch is only big enough to accommodate the thin HDD, or a thinner SSD, as you say.  I have no idea why the case is limited in this way.  It seems like one could take a sharp knife, and shave down the notch by 1/8 in. or so, and the SSD would fit fine.  I have no idea if there is some rational reason for this design by Dell (power? overheating?)  I don't recommend cutting on the plastic, and I'm going to check with Dell about the issue.

I have the same issue. Yes, there is a little plastic tab stopping the SSD from plugging in all the way.

Dell...we need your comments here please. Can we shave this plastic tab down to accommodate an SSD?

A standard size SSD will fit IF one shaves down the little piece of plastic that's stopping it from fully engaging.

If have just replaced my original disk with a Samsung SSD 840 series 256 GB. It fits perfectly without any modifications. Note that the Samsung SSD is lower than for instance the Crucial SSD.
