Hi,

I have the same problems as ClareJ. Received my Inspiron 17R SE (7720, N0517S40) today. Only make System-Backup on DVD, Windows and System Updates. Try to fix the problem by deinstall every not needed software and deaktivate audio functions: No big help. I am only using WLAN n and no other hardware is connected. Good ideas?

Thanks

Hi - thanks Elijah

It has done since 'out of the box' so no 'new' software connection.  I have no devices connected to the computer and nothing nearby.  It seems to be pretty random, yesterday it started when I opened 'Spider Soitaire' and kept going for maybe 20 seconds or more eventually petering out.  Usually it only makes the noise for 5/10 seconds and stops suddenly.  It isn't dvd drive related as I've tried opening the drive whilst the noise is happening and it makes no difference.  Have tried starting task manager whilst it's happening to see if I can see any rogue process running but I can't.

I'm not 100% sure (will check over next few days) but I think it happens when it's being mains powered.

Thanks again

Hi, @ Elijah

I have booted my Inspiron 17R SE with no noise. I was Internet surfing with no noise. I started playing MS Windows Card-Game "Solitär" (Patience) and few seconds later there was the noise, rising up and without a break till i shut down the Game. 15 sec. later the noise was muted. In other circumstances the noise was the first when booted up the Notebook and the last when shut down the notebook.

In the next days i will change the boot disk to a ssd and install a Win 7 Professional. I tell you how it works.

Best regards

Ok, have found out some more!

I was right; it does it when the power cord is plugged in and powered; unplug it whilst the nose is going  and the noise stops, plug it in again the noise starts again.

- Plugging headphones in makes no difference, ie the sound continues out loud and does not some through the headphones.

- From cold boot it started as the windows login screen came up and stopped maybe 15/20 seconds later.

- Started again while everything was loading for maybe 10 seconds.

- When I plugged my mouse in it started again for c5secs.

- Started solitaire, 15 secs, petering out rather than stopping abruptly

- Start MS Onenote - nothing

- Start mediaplayer - nothing

All above with speakers and mike muted

Unmuted speaker

- Played something in media player - hissing for second of so before song started then peters out; doesn't start again if you pause and unpause song or select new song.

Hello, I've received my Inspiron 17R SE today and have the same problem. What is the solution?

Hi Jan, they replaced the power transformer cable, the power jack on the laptop, the mother board and the sub - so I don't know which bit was the culprit but it hasn't happened since!

I switched off the energy saving in Dell Audio. Until now the speakers only make noise, when I play music. I hope, my problem is solved.

Hello Elijah,

after some days of use, I am sure, that my inspiron has a hardware problem (the static noise suddenly starts and ends, when i plug the powercord, the sound stops). I contacted Dell Germany last friday and hope, that the problem will be fixed soon.

Purchased a 17R SE on Monday and the static noise started out of the box. It goes for maybe 5 minutes after startup, then I don't hear it again until the next startup when it is cold. A hot start or restart does not seem to create the noise.

It seems that disconnecting the power plug at startup stops the noise.

After two 45 minute support sessions it was determined to change the motherboard & speaker. It sounds like that should resolve a problem that should not have occurred. I do have nothing but kudos for Dell support.

Followup. A technician changed the motherboard & speakers on my kitchen table. The new motherboard was bad so he reinstalled the original one. So, to my knowledge only the speakers were changed and that has solved my problem.

Dell support is awesome!

I have the exact same issues that Clare described above since mine was taken out of the box. How do I go about getting these issues fixed?

thanks, Scott

Scott,

The first step I took was to call tech support. They took control of my system remotely and diagnosed the problem. They were very good, but it is time consuming. I think I was on the phone for over 45 minutes with each phone call. With that said, try that with HP, Toshiba, or others.

They were unable to correct the problem, so they scheduled a tech to come to me and work on the laptop. They are not dealing with the hard drive, so all data you may have loaded should be OK. Be sure to copy all the numbers off the Dell label on the bottom of the laptop before you call so you don't have to be turning in over to get them.

Good luck
