Inspiron 6400 not accepting 2 sticks of RAM

Question

Hello all I've been asked to have a look at a friends old laptop to see if I can get it working again. I've solved the initial issue of having the incorrect RAM installed and have bought the correct type but now I have a new problem. The laptop is only accepting 1 stick of RAM (1GB). If I put 2 sticks of RAM (2 X 1GB) into the laptop it doesn't boot. The Num Lock led is solid, the Caps Lock led is flashing and the Scroll Lock led is also flashing. I have tested both of the sticks of RAM in slot A and managed to boot the laptop but I am unable to use both the sticks (1 in slot A and one in slot B). Any help would be greatly apreciated. William

Where did you buy the RAM? Have you tried 1 in slot B only?

If the system won't work with one module in B either (none in A) that socket is bad  -- you will need to replace the system board.
