Hi gMishr,

Welcome to the Community,

To find out if its an issue with the speaker run the custom test on Audio device using the PC Checkup. When you run the Custom test on Audio device it will give you an option to run test on internal speakers,if you hear sound from the speakers while running the test, than its not an issue with the speaker.

Refer to this link below for steps to run Custom check on Audio Device to test speakers:

support.dell.com/.../document

Your system should have Dell Support Center preinstalled on it.

Let me know how the test goes.

Thank You

PC Checkup probably works with windows and I have Ubuntu on my laptop.

And also I installed a new version of Ubuntu (12.04), after making a recovery disk of factory installed software, with pre-installed ubuntu 10.10, so if Dell Support Center was preinstalled, its not there anymore. May be I need to restore the system, but it'd be better if this can be avoided. And also if anyone can help me with that issue with warranty.

I ran dell diagnostic test at startup (by pressing f12), but i dont think there are any audio tests there.

You must also register the system with Dell:

I have done that, otherwise how could they comment about my product being out of warranty(although it should not be so).

When you registered the system, did you update the date of purchase?  If not, it's the ship date (to the reseller) that's used as the warranty start date.

no....

now how to update the date of purchase, although even considering date of shipping "one year domestic complete cover" time is far from being over.

Hi  gMishr,

I am also facing exactly same problem what you faced.I also purchased Dell Vostro 1540 two months from flipkart with complete cover warranty. But first its right speaker stopped functioning and now both stopped functioning.Tech support guy informed me that it is because of VLC.Could you please share how did you solved the problem? Did you purchased new speakers or Dell replaced it?

Thanks and Regards
