The F1/F2 prompt at startup is due to the failing hard drive. The failure to charge may be -- if it's just under Windows that the problem occurs. If it occurs outside of Windows, go into the BIOS setup and check to make sure the AC adapter is recognized. If it is listed as "unknown", try a new Dell adapter - if that does not fix the problem, then the system needs an internal repair - a new power jack or mainboard.
To check the warranty status, go to the Dell support site in your country and look up the system configuration using the service tag.
thanks very much for that. I actually unplugged and let it drain down and when it reached 80% the battery light problem stopped and it recharged when i plugged it back in. however, now its back to 99% and flshing again, plugged in not charging.
ill try checking the bios setup for the chargers compatability now :)
Having the EXACT same issues...and from the looks of it, so are LOTS of people. Glad to see that this started happening a week out of warranty. No kidding, a week. Thanks Dell. I hope you enjoyed my last purchase.
I am having the same issue too, and am out of warranty as well.
June 2011 I had blue screen issues after updating my system. I had to threaten Dell warranty to sue them for my $2000 cost for my laptop due to the fact that a new computer should not break so quickly. A technician replaced the hard drive July 2011.
After signing in to Dell in May 2012, to check my computer drive updates, I immediately began to have blue screen issues thereafter. Now my battery flashes as well along with the F1 prompt at start up. I am constantly crashing.
It seems that these issues happen at warranty end date, updating drivers, and signing in to the Dell drive check program, can't recall the name of the Dell download program that checks your computer from the web. But, I had to remove it to resolve blue screen issues. I also found a blog that stated that the particular program that Dell used caused false blue screens.
I believe that I purchased my laptop with the intent that my investment would last at least 5-years from purchase. I am severely disappointed to be tricked by Dell to cause me to purchase another computer or pay for warranty programs and services to fix THEIR faulty issues or scams.

If your battery is good, check the BEEP codes which is the sound you hear when you start up your computer. Mine has a very long single beep.

For me this means that my battery is fine and the my problem is something other than the battery.
1. My battery icon flashes still

This video is very informative.
1. Take battery out of computer
2. press and hold the button on the battery when removed from computer. The button is a strip on the exterior of the battery and lights will come on.
3. take note of two sets of light configurations. Then look at the video to compare notes.
