bvretr,

You're trying file and printer sharing with Windows 7 and XP machines, correct?

Try reading...

Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP this works both ways.

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

rick,i also downloaded the latest version of java. if it will scan from the computers, ;doesn't that indicate there is communication?

bvretr,

Can this printer be used like a copying machine, without a computer attached? If yes, does it copy in Black and white and color?

I would try doing this to each computer to make sure it's installed properly.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 7 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).

Also try these tweaks...

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

thanks, rick. can you tell me where to access the patch you mentioned to completely remove the installations i have made? the odd thing is that it was working fine while being shared by all 4 computers on a network but suddenly, for no apparent obvious reason, refused to print from any of them, either networked or connected to the individual computers. could this have anything to do with a microsoft system update perhaps? cheers, john

John,

If it can copy both black and white and color, then it's probably not installed properly and/or the virus program and firewall are blocking communications.

Yes, if there was an update for the printer. It may hae been the wrong drivers and/or installed incorrectly.
