The majority of laptops do not allow the computer to run with the cover closed. You can use a shim under the cover to keep the magnetic switch from putting it into sleep mode. Close the cover abd then put into sleep mode manually or by timing out. The external mouse or keyboard will wake the laptop. You could also go inside and disable the magnetic switch. This is somewhat extreme.
Also, if you would have read the posts in this thread, then you would know that the issue is caused by a faulty BIOS and was already solved by Dell for some notebook models via a BIOS update.
Obviously though, Dell has not released a BIOS update to fix that issue for all notebooks.
So, Dell, please release a BIOS update to fix the issue for the remaining notebooks as well.
This issue is extremely annoying, especially when the notebook is being used with a docking station.

Wrong. That is complete bullsh**.
Of course the majority of notebooks do allow to run with the lid closed.
There even is a setting in Windows which lets you choose what should happen if the lid is closed, see:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-what-happens-when-you-close-your-laptop
So, what you're saying is entirely wrong.
