Through extensive testing I've found a work around for this problem.
Both, driver and application showing up for my Vostro 3460 at Dell's driver update page for Windows 8 are broken. None of them works. Do not bother installing them. I repeat, they do NOT work.
Instead:
- Download and install the Windows 7 64 (!!) driver available here: ERICSSON AB Dell Wireless 5560 HSPA+ Mini Card Driver. Although this is a Windows 7 driver and not associated with Windows 8 this is the only driver which works in Windows 8, too.
- Copy and install the WWAN application coming along with your Driver CD. Yes, CD! I was NOT able to find a working application for Windows 8 anywhere on Dell's crappy driver web site. The application shows up when manually selecting Windows 7 on the autostart program on the driver CD. The associated file name is R22MRA00.exe
With both, driver and application, installed, WWAN/UMTS works well on Windows 8.
Dell, update your web page! You drove me crazy when trying to find a solution!
Have done the exact same for the above, and still the device cannot locate drivers according device manager despite uninstalling, then re-installing the Windows 8 compatible drivers from the relevant section on this site.

I second this, Dell Vostro 3360.

Thank you, this worked for me. Except the GPS... so i guess we still have to wait for a working driver.
