The Led should normally only light up when the power adapter is connected to the wall outlet and can continue to light up for a couple of seconds(due to internal capacitors of the adapter/mainboard which act like batteries) after the power adapter has been disconnected from the wall outlet.
If that is what you experience then the mainboard should be fine.
As rightly said by MicroTest, the LED on the AC Adapter would continue to be lit for 10 – 15 seconds after being disconnected from the wall outlet. This is due to the static power. If the LED is staying lit for a longer duration, it could be an issue. Please confirm the duration for which the LED stays lit.
Thanks both for your replies, the light stays on constantly when connected to the laptop.
I start with the charger disconnected from both the wall and the laptop, the led would be off. If I then connect the charger to the laptop but not the wall, the led comes on seemingly drawing power from the battery somehow.
Thank you for explaining the issue. If you have another known-good AC Adapter, connect it to the computer and check. This is to isolate if the problem is with the AC Adapter or the Motherboard.
