XPS 15Z Wireless connected but no internet or file sharing

Question

Hi I have an XPS15Z (L511z) for about 10 months. Everything has worked fine, until I powered it on one time and the internet simply does not work. The laptop connects to the wireless network but does not have an internet connection or the ability to share files and see other networked computers. Here is what I have so far: - File sharing is enabled, network map feature can see other computers but the Network 'folder' doesn't see any computers. - No settings were altered or programs installed when this occurred - The router and internet works with all other computers and phones through wireless and wired connections. - The router doesn't have any ip or mac filtering enabled. - Using a wired ethernet connection does not work and says it is connected to an unidentified network. - I disabled the firewall and same problem. - Pinging the router doesn't work. - Pinging the laptop from another computer doesn't work. Although the bytes received over the wireless network of the laptop increments with each ping. The bytes sent remains unchanged during this time - Ip renew and release has been tried and failed - Tried uninstalling all wireless drivers and programs. Installed the most recent drivers off of Dells website.  - Ran windows 7 wireless trouble shooting wizards, didn't work. -  Constructed elaborate tin foil hat and screamed gibberish while running circles around the laptop. Didn't work... I had found one post on a forum with someone with a similar problem and guess he never got it fixed. Hoping someone here has an idea of whats happening. Don't really want to call Dell tech support, heard way to many nightmares at how poor they are.  Thanks Chris

We suspect that it was an McAgee Update that caused the connection problem. The board got swamped with members not being able to connect.

If you have McAfee installed, try using a system restore point and go back a day or two. There was an update that has caused connection problems.

If you do not have McAfee, then Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here

The restore point definitely worked.

Two questions:

Was it a McAfee update or a windows update that caused this issue?

I assume I need to perform this update at some point in the future. Will I have to continually avoid this update or will there be a fix?

From helping other members, I feel this was a McAfee update problem. I'm sure McAfee has already made a new release, so things should be back to normal.

Yes, you can use Windows Updates to keep your system up to date. I would ONLY have it update Windows ONLY.

Hi,

I had the same problem(XPS15 L502x). System restore worked for me too. I've noticed no McAfee update happened between my restore point and when the network issue started. My Brother has a laptop with another brand. He got the windows update too which is running with no issues so far.

Does it mean I wont be able to update my windows any more? :emotion-16:
