I disassembled my laptop (I did it because I don't have a warranty anymore), and blow out all the dust on the mainboard, 'cause i'm having a little problems with my HDD but that's other history, so I tried to use the battery on my laptop and Voila! It worked, so maybe you guys who have this problem can try to do this and see if it works.
I have almost 2,5 years out of 3 of warranty, so they replaced my motherboard with a new one and it worked. Unfortunately my battery is on 81% of health after almost 10 months of usage, I hope it can be also replaced..
Check the BIOS setup (f2 at powerup). If the AC adapter is listed as "unknown" or "not present" and IS a genuine Dell adapter, try another Dell adapter. If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the power jack:
ok guys, i'm still having the same problem, ordered a new battery, didn't solve it, from what i've read so far it could be the dc power jack board which i have on order, i'll report back if the problem is resolved soon as i've replaced it which will be tuesday at the earliest
IT WORKS! Won't believe what just happen! I had the new battery plugged in, wouldn't run off battery, so been using the laptop off ac adaptor, same 3/4 white lights followed by orange.
Just finished watching a movie with my flat mate running the laptop of AC adaptor, as the laptop was shutting down my flat mate pulled the plug out of the mains and it carried on running! :D Couldn't believe my eyes! rushed back and swapped the old battery and works off old one too!
charging status also now says 'plugged in, charging'. I've even pulled the DC jack out a few times to make sure and definitely works. My guess is that the module controlling the switching to and from the battery and AC must have hanged and when the plug was pulled out the socket it must have given it a kick. I've not yet received the replacement DC jack board and will inspect the circuitry to see why this had worked. so anyone still facing the problem, give this a go and please report back. :D
I too have the same problem. ie my Inspiron n5110 laptop is not working without AC power. My battery has 95 % power back up, but doesn't work with battery. The battery lights flashes 4 orange/ 1 white. I too followed your instruction of pressing F2 & restoring BIOS factory settings, ran PC check up also. Every thing was fine. The battery adopter shows 65 W.
To my surprise, my battery is working in my colleague's laptop n5110 without any problem & without AC power. So now I feel the problem is not with battery/ adapter. So please advise what will be the problem with my laptop. my laptop is 1 year 4 months old.
kannan, put your friends battery in yours and try pulling the plug out the MAINS. have a read of my last post and see if it works. let us know if it does, ive not had any problem running off battery since

Hi everyone,
OK, most of us facing the problem called " Battery plugged in but not charging " right.
So this is Two solutions.
1. May be problem in laptop mother board (better buy brand new laptop instead of spending amount to repair).
2. may be problem in Charging IC (dell charging ICs around from RS.3000 to 3500 )

And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.

If you mean the software that shows the battery status, it's called Dell quickset.

I think the battery is bad. It might be about to die.
