Correction, which affects the rest:

The system has two memory sockets -- not  four.

You can either replace one with a 4G and have six or both with a pair of 4G to go to 8 total.

You must also have a 64-bit OS or the memory above 4 G won't be recognized.

Hi Reza,

I would like to inform you that the maximum amount of memory this system support is as follows:

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Hi Prateek

I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your information.

It is vital for me to gain either 1600MHz RAM speed or above. I thought by updating my BIOS it will be possible, however, it would not and now my RAM speed specification is 1600MHz but the speed mentioned in Setup is 1333MHz.

I have checked out the hardware specification using CPU-Z application (an application to monitor the hardware specifications on the computer) and found out the RAM speed was mentioned as 1600MHz. Based on this I have the following questions;

1. Is it possible that the performance of this RAM in my Dell Studio 1557 will be quite better/higher than 1333MHz RAM performance? I mean is it possible that this RAM works based on its 1600MHz speed while the RAM speed mentioned on Setup is still 1333MHz? because this RAM speed specification is 1600MHz.

2. Is there any procedure to settle this problem by either upgrading any part of hardware or updating any driver?

3. If the answer of the previous questions is negative, is it safe to use these RAM memories (because these RAM speed are 1600MHz) or the safer way is replace them with 2 pieces of 4GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM?

Regards,

Reza Mehrabani

There's no way to run RAM faster than 1333 MHz in this model -- you can install faster RAM but the system is not capable of running RAM any faster, nor can it be upgraded to do so.

Hi Prateek

If so, you haven't answer my third question.

If the RAM works, it's just fine.  There's no harm in running RAM slower than the labeled spec.

I have another question based on discussion above;

Will this RAM (1600MHz) effect on CPU performance?

Because I see my CPU will work flactuated from 30% up to 100% rapidly during my heavy application works. It looks like a major problem in CPU.

CPU performance normally is fine about 30%, but when I do a small activity in my laptop, even when I move the mouse, my CPU will go up to 100% and come back to about 30%.

What is wrong? It could be because of RAM 1600MHz?

The RAM has nothing to do with the issue - it could be the system is throttling back due to overheating.  Then again, it may also be normal - the CPU speed will fluctuate with the load on the system.  This is by design with all processors made in the past few years.

1. I found the CPU problem became fine when a noise like a fan noise or like a motocycle noise will heared from CPU area.

Is that noise an extra power or an extra processor for CPU?

2. I have heared there are three generations for Dell with core i7 CPU. How can I find about mine?

It is Dell Studio 1557. I bought it in 29 December 2009.

Regards,

Reza

Sounds like the fan is running too fast - which indicates there may be a dust buildup on the heatsink.  Clean it thoroughly.

You have a first-generation i7 system.

Hi,

Can we insert only one 8 GB (DDR3 RAM) in one slot or each slot has limitation of 4 GB as well and we have to use both slots?

If it is possible, can you suggest any brand?

Thanks
