Stereo sounds lost when playing games.

Question

Hi all. I'm on a Dell xps 15 which i bought 1 year ago. I started to play some FPS games recently. At first there wasn't problems but now something really strange and annoying happens, whenever I start my new game ( or when the server change its level, the game is restarted) I lose my stereo sounds, which is very important on FPS games ( to see if people are left or right, even behind or in front if I have a 5.1 headphones ). The sounds just come to the middle, like if a person on my right takes a shot, the sound just come from both sides, where it SHOULD just come from the right headphone.  To solve this I found quite a weird way, that is go to Realtek HD audio manager --> speaker/headphone --> speaker setup --> change configuration to quadraphonic/5.1 and then change back to stereo --> go back to the game and sounds come back perfectly.  I actually thought that it was the game which didn't function properly, but I just got a new game and played it for a while, same thing happen. What kind of problem is this please ? and how to solve it forever ? It's really annoying as one game doesn't last longer than 20 - 30 mins. After that I need to go Alt-tab then do the things again ( also i don't play on a particular server, i change server quite often which make the sounds wrong as well). Sometimes alt-tab too much makes the system freeze :( Thanks for your reading and hope you understand what I mean xDD. Also the sound card driver is said to work properly, latest version.

Here is the direct link to BIOS version A12 for the XPS L502x. I think A12 is the same as A11 but A12 provides support for Windows 8. ftp1.dell.com/.../1

Hi papapin1,

I suggest that you install the following drivers in the order given below:

BIOS (Latest version)
Chipset driver (Intel Panther Point HM77 Chipset)
Audio driver (Realtek Audio ALC3620 | Realtek Audio)

Click on this link to install the above mentioned drivers:

Do not use the system till it restarts and comes up to the desktop. Restart the system after each driver update.

Please check after all the driver installation.

I request you to flash the BIOS first, then download drivers for chipset and Audio driver respectively.

I tried downloading the file and it works, so probably there was an issue with the site when you tried to download. So request you to try doing it again, if it doesn’t work then change the country to United states. If this also doesn’t work please try with a different computer.

I tried to change the country to UK as I live here, it doesn't work as well as US.

This is very strange. Anyway if you could email me the file then it would be great. It's only some MBs though.

Well this is very screwed up. In XPS 15 L502x there is only update for BIOS, nothing for Chipset and Audio. :(
