Since the monitor is not detected in the inspiron 8600, Please check if the cable fits properly at the back of the monitor and in the laptop. You can also check the monitor is detected in display properties. Follow the below steps.
Right click on desktop screen> click on properties> click on settings> under the settings check whether you can select both the monitors and also Change the screen resolution for both the monitor and check the box which is mentioned as ‘Extend my windows desktop onto this monitor.
Hey, thanks for the reply;) I can confirm the monitor is detected as I can change the Screen resolution . When u click 'extend the desktop the screen flashes on the laptop But nothing happens on the external monitor. Thanks Neil
Since the monitor is getting detected but there is no display on the screen, let’s try updating the video drivers on your computer. Use the link below to download the video driver:
Once you have updated the video driver, in case it doesn’t work, please try different resolutions and check if the external monitor works, if it still doesn’t, change cables or connect another monitor and check if that monitor works.
Since you have mentioned that there is an error message comes up while installing the video driver, please uninstall the existing video driver from the computer. Follow the steps below.
Start> control panel> add or remove programs and uninstall the video driver. Once the video driver is uninstalled then reinstall the video driver using the link below.
At this point of time the logical next step would be reinstalling the operating system after backing up all the data. Have you tried connecting another monitor to this laptop?
