Hi x-zen,

Thank you for your patience. We have researched on the issue and here are the findings:

The below mentioned applications only work with Integrated (Intel) video card:

  1. wmplayer.exe
  2. ehshell.exe
  3. moviemaker.exe
  4. PowerDVD*.exe
  5. WinDVD.exe

It is the expected behavior of AMD graphics card, not to work with PowerDVD. Hence, PowerDVD will only function with Intel video card on your system.

For more details, you can also refer to the attached file: http://en.community.dell.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/3519/7848.AMD-limitations.pdf

Please reply for any further questions.

Hi x-zen,

This can either be an issue with the video drivers or with the Power DVD itself. First, I will recommend you to uninstall and re install video drivers to see if that fixes the issue:

  1. Click on "Start" and right click on "Computer".
  2. Click on "Manage" and click on "Device Manager".
  3. Go to "display adapters" and right click on both Intel and AMD drivers and click on "uninstall".
  4. Check the box for both the drivers to delete the software.
  5. Once the video drivers and uninstalled, restart your system windows will install driver for Intel video card automaticallly.
  6. Once Intel driver is installed, click on the link: http://dell.to/PsUEI0
  7. Click on "Get Driver" and click on "Single file download".
  8. Click on "Save" and save the driver on the desktop.
  9. Right click on the driver that is saved on the desktop and click on "run as administrator".
  10. Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
  11. Restart your system.

Associate the application to High Performance GPU processor using AMD Catalyst Control Center and check if the issue is resolved. If the issue is not resolved, uninstall and re install to the Power DVD :

  1. Click on "Start" and click on "Control Panel".
  2. Click on "Programs and features".
  3. A list of applications installed on your system will open.
  4. Right click on CyberLink PowerDVD and click on uninstall.
  5. Restart your system and click on the link: http://bit.ly/OG7TX1
  6. Select your country.
  7. Click on "Continue".
  8. Sign in to your "Dell My Account". (You can create a Dell account by clicking on "Create a Dell Account" in case you do not have a Dell account).
  9. Go through the terms and conditions and check "I have read, understand and agree with the terms and conditions of My Dell Downloads website".
  10. Click on "Register System".
  11. You will get list of factory installed applications.
  12. Install Cyber PowerDVD from it and follow the on screen instructions.

Restart your system and again associate the application to High Performance GPU processor using AMD Catalyst Control Center and check if the issue is resolved. In case the issue still persists, update the system BIOS:

Note: Please save all your data as your system will restart automatically after the BIOS update. The ac adapter should be connected and the battery should be at least 10% charged. Please disconnect all the external devices connected to the system before updating the BIOS:

  1. Click on the link: http://dell.to/OHd8rj
  2. Click on "Get Driver" and click on "Single file download".
  3. Click on "Run" and update the BIOS following the on screen instructions.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any questions.

Hi Vikram,

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately all those things didn't solve the problem.

- I updated BIOS

- I reinstalled Intel and AMD video drivers

- I reinstalled PowerDVD and installed extra 'critical' update

PowerDVD still uses only Intel GPU when playing movies, whilest AMD GPU is permanently turned off (or is activated by another application assigned to High Performance GPU).

I understand that having newest versions of BIOS and drivers is in general a good idea, however as the laptop was ordered about one month ago it must have worked with the previous versions of BIOS and video drivers as well.

Would you check if someone in Dell really tested the PowerDVD on Inspiron 7520 with AMD Radeon HD 7730M and those tests can confirm that PowerDVD is actually able to use the AMD GPU, please?

If so, what versions of PowerDVD, BIOS, Intel and AMD video drivers they used?

Making PowerDVD working properly on my laptop is a critical thing, because playing movies directly from blu-ray drive was one of the key features I choose the laptop for.

Thanks.

Hi x-zen,

I appreciate your efforts. You can also try chaging the power play options in AMD Catalyst Control Center:

Open AMD Catalyst Control Center and click on "Powerplay".

Click on "PowerPlay" again.

Select "Maximum performance" for "Plugged in" and "Battery" both and click on "Apply".

Note: The picture shows "Maximum battery Life" for "Battery". However, please make sure you select "Maximum Performance" for "Plugged in" and "Battery" both.

Check if the issue is fixed. In case the issue still persists, I will recommend you to factory restore your system:

Note: PC restore will lead to data (pictures, documents, programs, music) loss. Please perform a data backup prior to this step. Please disconnect any external peripherals (printer, scanner or any USB device) as well.

 To perform PC restore:-

  1. Restart PC, press 3-4 times when the Dell logo appears.
  2. Advanced Boot Options menu appears, ‘Repair your Computer' is highlighted, press Enter. (Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice).
  3. Windows is loading files screen appears. Wait for it to load.
  4. System Recovery Options prompt appears. Specify the language and keyboard input that you want, and then click ‘Next’.
  5. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials; select the username from the drop-down list, type the password and click OK.
  6. Choose a Recovery Tool Window appears, select Dell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Backup.
  7. The Welcome screen will show 2 options; Restore computer and preserve my new or changed files and Select other System Backup and more options. Select the second option (Select other System Backup and more options) and click Next.
  8. The next window shows these options; Backup Files and folders and Restore my computer. Select ‘Restore my computer’.
  9. Select the Factory Image and click ‘Next’.
  10. The next window shows 2 options; 'Preserve new or changed files before restoring to selected System Backup' and 'Restore without preserving new or changed files'. Select the second option (Restore without preserving new or changed files) and click Next.
  11. A prompt appears stating that your computer is about to be restored all data currently on your computer will be deleted and replaced with your selected Full System Backup. If an Emergency File & Folder Backup was created, it will still be saved in the location you selected. Click 'Yes, continue' and click Next.
  12. PC restore will initiate. Once done, click Restart.
  13. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a user account.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi,

The PowerPlay setting is on 'Maximize Performance'.

Please note, that the issue is related to the PowerDVD and switchable graphics with AMD Radeon 7730M only.

Other media players such as for example Media Player Classis - Home Cinema, VLC, PotPlayer can properly activate High Performance GPU.

Also PowerDVD works fine, but only on Intel HD 4000 GPU. As the card isn't brilliant there are some performance issues...

So before asking me to re-install everything would you ensure, please that the configuration:

PowerDVD + switchable graphics + AMD Radeon 7730M

is supported?

I expect clear answer from you:

EITHER -

1) Yes, the PowerDVD can properly activate and work on High Performance AMD Radeon 7730M on Inspiron 7520 laptop. I can guarantee that because Dell verified it on the following configuration: (please specify...)

OR

2) No,  the PowerDVD can not work properly on Inspiron 7520 because it works only on Intel HD 4000 GPU and can not take advantage of High Performance AMD Radeon 7730M. The configuration which Dell sold for you is rubbish.

Thanks.

Hi Quantitec,

If Cyberlink was pre installed on your system when you purchased it, please follow the below steps to re install it:

  • Click on the link: http://bit.ly/OG7TX1
  • Select your country in the drop down and click on 'Continue'.
  • If you already have an account on the Dell's website, please use the same user name and password or else, you can create a new account by clicking on 'Create a new account'.
  • Please go through the terms and conditions and check the box which says “I have read, understand, and agree with the terms and conditions of the 'My Dell Downloads' website.
  • Click on 'Register System'.
  • You will get a list of factory installed software.
  • You should get an option to install Cyberlink from the list of applications available.
  • Note: Please follow these steps from your 15r SE system.

In case you purchased Cyberlink seperately, you should have received a disk from which you can re install it.
