Product Manager from distribution where I bought two same Dells (in second one - backlit keyboard is working fine) claims that this laptop and service tag have backlit keyboard and Dell messed package...

Just to point out that my last message is directed at the support team, not at any of you who have tried to help!

Yeah so, I still haven't received any friends request or inbox message so I'm getting pretty mad now. I have the ability to turn the backlit keyboard on and off in the manager thing, so surely if I didn't have a backlit keyboard, I wouldn't be able to do that. But my F6 key doesn't have a picture on it, so I'm confused. I don't want to have to call dell support and spend ages on hold just to have them tell me my model doesn't have backlighting, which is why I'm on here.

Exactly the same problem here as well. I've only had my laptop for just over 1 week now and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Fn + F6 will not work. Help???

Hi Helplz,

If your system was ordered with backlit keyboard access Dell QuickSet utility(All Programs) and check if the backlit keyboard is turned on/off.

If it shows turned on,access this file path c:\program file\dell\quickset  and double click on Launch BacklitKB.exe

Let me know what message you get when you double click on it.

Also post your system model and Windows version installed.

Thank You

Hi Roshan,

I accessed the file path you said and, when I double clicked on Launch BacklitKB.exe it came up with a message saying "Unable to detect the backlit keyboard". Plus, when I went into Windows Mobility Center, the option to turn my backlit keyboard on or off was not there. Any ideas?

Also my system model Inspiron 7520 and I have Windows 8. I definitely should have a backlit keyboard as it was listed on the Packaging Slip that the laptop came with.

Thanks

Guys

I thought I should chip in here...you'll want to read this!!!!

I too had the same problem with my NEW 15R SE (see previous page)...

I tried what was said on this forum...

I became friends with the Dell employee on here...

Took his advice on a private MSG to reinstall and do some other things....nowt worked...

But I'm an impatient guy...

Called up Dell support...

50 minute call...remote log in etc etc...plenty of reboots...

Telephone engineer gave up all confused and arranged an engineer to come out and replace keyboard (next day support)...

Next dayv- Engineer arrived...opened all his tools up...unclipped the old keyboard and asked me

"what's wrong with this one"

"backlight not working"

Lifts out the keyboard..."that's because it's not plugged in"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes - when he lifted out the keyboard there was a wire unplugged just hanging there...

Plugged it in...started it up - hey presto Fn & F6 works!!!!!

For a sec, I thought you were bluffing....but that's true, I just lifted my keyboard, and that bloody thing was not connected...how the quality control ppl missed this thing. I would also like to say, if you do not know how to take the keyboard out. this link on YouTube shows you how to take the keyboard out, though the place he puts the screw driver is right; he doing it the wrong way and can break your keyboard. You just need to press the small latches inside GENTLY, if you do not have any idea what to do, leave it for a technician. The rest of the video shows you where the wire is connected. The link is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H34vWkfRXjE
