Hi Dhirendra.drc,

It might be an issue with the hardware or the software of the computer. To isolate the issue, let’s run the diagnostics on the computer:

To run the ‘Dell Diagnostics’

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, press F12 on the Dell logo
  • Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu
  • Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT

If the above steps do not work, then check in safe mode:

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, tap F8 on Dell logo 2-3 times
  • This will take you to ‘Windows Advanced Boot Options’
  • Choose ‘Safe Mode’ in the Advanced Boot menu(F8)
  • When Windows finishes loading, check if you are able to work on the computer

If the system works in safe mode, perform system restore.

  • Click on 'Start'
  • Click on 'All Programs' then click 'Accessories'
  • Click on 'System Tools'
  • Click on the 'System Restore'
  • Then click 'Next' on the "Restore system files and settings" window
  • Then choose the restore point that you want to use(choose a date when the system was working good)
  • After that click 'next' to continue
  • Then click 'Finish' on the "Confirm your restore point" window to start the System Restore
  • Then Click 'Yes' to the once started, System Restore cannot be interrupted. Do you want to continue? dialog box.
  • System Restore will now restore Windows 7 to the state that was recorded in the restore point.
  • Immediately after logging in to Windows 7 after the reboot, you should see a message that System Restore completed successfully.
  • Click Close. Restart the computer and check if the issue still persists.

If none of the steps work, then you may have to reinstall the operating system on the computer.
Note:  Reinstalling the operating system will erase all the data from the computer. We would advise you to take a complete backup of your data (pictures, music, videos, and documents).

Please reply if you have any questions.

Hi Dhirendra.drc,

Thank you for your response. Since, the computer works after 25-30 minutes, I would recommend you to run the diagnostics to isolate the issue. Alternatively, check if the laptop is overheating. I would also recommend you to update the BIOS of the computer:

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*Battery is 10%> or >10% charged
*Battery charger should be connected
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

  • Click on the link http://dell.to/UmY8yD
  • Click on ‘Download File’
  • Check on the radio box ‘Single-file download’
  • Click ‘Continue’
  • Click ‘Save’
  • Choose the location as desktop, save the file on the desktop
  • Right click and choose ‘Run as Administrator’
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program
  • Restart the computer

I have also attached the file for your reference

Please reply with the findings.

Hi Dhirendra.drc,

Thank you for your response. Please check if the system shuts down in BIOS:

  • Power off the computer
  • Restart the computer, tap ‘F2’ key on Dell logo 2-3 times
  • This will take you to the ‘BIOS’ screen
  • Please wait on the BIOS screen for few minutes and check if the shuts down

I would also recommend you to clean the air vents.

Below are the steps to clean the air vents:

  • Check the vents on the computer to see if they are covered with dust and not allowing heat and air to pass through
  • Turn off the System
  • Unplug the AC Adapter
  • Remove the Battery
  • Use Compressed Air to blow the dust out of the vents

Note: Please use compressed air can. When using compressed air can, use the can according to the directions on the side of the can as you can cause damage to the computer if used incorrectly.

If the system shuts down in BIOS, then this could be a hardware issue. The fan and the heat sink may require requirement. If the system does not shuts down in BIOS, then it could be a software issue and we can proceed accordingly.

Please reply with the findings.

Hi Dhirendra.drc,

Thank you for your response. I would recommend you to perform the above mentioned steps and check if that works. If the system shuts down in BIOS as well, then the heat sink and the fan may have to be replaced.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Hi,

It appears to be an issue with Operating system of your computer and might need reinstallation. However, before you re-install Operating system, you can try 'Start Up Repair' and see if it works. The steps for the same are as below:

  • Insert the Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive, and restart your computer.
  • Tap the key during startup. The Boot Device Menu appears
  • Note:  If the Boot Device Menu does not appear, restart the system, and try again.
  • Press the to highlight *Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive, and press . The Press Any Key to Boot from CD or DVD screen appears
  • Press any key to boot to the Windows Vista DVD when prompted.
  • Note: You must do this immediately or Windows may not load the install window. You may see additional screens during the boot process; choose the default option and continue.
  • The Language Settings screen appears
  • Click to select the specific regional information, and click next.
  • The Install Now screen appears
  • In the lower-left corner of the screen, click Repair your Computer.
  • The Operating System Selection window appears
  • Click Microsoft Windows Vista, even if it is already highlighted, and click Next.
  • The Startup Options window appears, if any startup problems are detected
  • Click No, if applicable.
  • The Recovery Tools menu appears
  • Click on Start up Repair and process will start.

If this does not work, you might need to reinstall Operating system using PC restore or the Windows DVD to format the hard drive and install a fresh copy. Before you proceed, I will advise you to take a complete backup of your data (pictures, music, applications, videos, documents) as this step leads to complete data loss. Remove all the external peripherals (like printers, scanners, any USB device except keyboard and mouse) connected to your computer.

If you use PC restore, the system will be restored to the factory defaults and all the factory installed applications would be there. However, while using a Windows DVD, you would need to install the Windows first and then install the device drivers and applications.

You can restore your computer to default factory settings by following the steps below:

  • Start the computer.
  • Tap the key about 5-6 times on the keyboard during the startup process ( as soon as you see the blue Dell logo) until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu on the screen.
  • Note:  If the Windows Advanced Options menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.
  • Press the key to select Repair Your Computer and press the key.
  • The System Recovery Options window appears.
  • Select your language and click next.
  • Log in as a user with administrative rights and click OK.
  • Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
  • The Dell Factory Image Restore window appears.
  • Click Next.
  • Check Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition.
  • Click Next.
  • The factory software image is now written to your hard drive.
  • Click Finish to restart the computer.

If this does not work, you can perform an Operating system re-installation using the Windows DVD. For more information on this, you can refer to link:  http://dell.to/TqClXm

Please reply in case you have further questions.
