I have searched for the solution to this problem and it turns out that there is a relatively easy fix which is to disable High Precision Event Timer in the bios. Unfortunately the dell inspiron 17r se bios does not have this option.
If this was a fix for a different model then perhaps it does not apply to your model. For other fixes for noise problems see the Choppy/Skipping Audio FAQ.
I am wondering if there is a way to disable HPET on my dell laptop or if there is some kind of bios update with such an option.
The newest BIOS version came out 3 weeks ago. It doesn't mention a fix for noise.
I checked that link and tried turning off the accelerating of my ssd but it did not fix my sound problem. Is there any way I could contact dell to ask to have a HPET option to put in to the next bios update? From what I've read there is no harm in having the HPET disabled and it would fix my audio problem.
The venue for submitting suggestions is IdeaStorm. I'm not sure where to submit a request. You can send a private message to any of the Dell people that post on this forum. Click on a name to go to their page and then click on Send Message -- or if that is not visible then use Add Friend to send a message. anybody with "Dell_" in front of their name.
Sounds like you are guessing at the problem (oh this person did this on his system according to the google search, let me try this). BIOS is probably the last thing you need to worry about. Try updating the drivers first - sometimes even looking in the audio control panel can tell you if there is a problem.....
I say this because audio is probably the most common misdiagnosed problem because networking/internet access.
If there is no option to disable the High Precision Event Timer, it is probably because there isn't on, and henceforth is probably not the problem...
