I was having the same issue as the poster, same exact specs, followed all the steps in this and got the same response as the original forum poster.

My computer never made it to the Boot to windows 8 option.

I tried a different hard drive (I was worried that it was the hard drive that came with it that had crashed, but again I can't get past the black screen with

blue writing:

"Use the (Up) and (Down) arrow keys to move the pointer to the desired boot device. Press [Enter] to attempt the boot or Esc to cancel. "

in yellow:

"Boot mode is set to:Legacy; Secure boot: OFF"

in white:

"LEGACY BOOT:

UEFI BOOT:

OTHER OPTIONS:"

in gray:

"Setup

Diagnostics

Change boot mode setting"

Just got off the phone w/ tech support, expecting a call back from a tier 2 rep.  >.<  I'm not very happy right now, as this is the computer I use for school work.

WHAT A JOKE!!! The first person I talked to didn't even log the call! This person refuses to get me to a rep that knows what they're talking about and treats me like a dummie.  Still no avail.... Frustrations is growing.

No big change other than Dell techs not having a single clue what to do, and refusing to agree that it's a motherboard issue and that it IS under the warranty for them to replace it.  Tech manager called me, said I should hear back from their next tier up or their "specialist" tomorrow on a fix.  I'm weary of this and doubt it'll happen, but hey! I can hope right?  In the mean time, I have a useless fine piece of technology just sitting like an expensive paperweight.  Not to mention that I know for a fact that this is not a HDD problem (as I have been able to load the HDD using other hardware. ). P.S. 1-800-Alienware  (option 2 and then 4) make sure you have your service tag and your expedited service - both are on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.  Good Luck!

hi there,

I have the same boot problem by my Ispiron R17. tried every thing, what I found here. they didn't work for me. Anything else?

Well i received the answer from dell tech from my country... Its caused by Win8. Windows 8 is somehow binded to your motherboard (its licence is) so if you re experiencing something like dell logo pops-up for second or so and then black screen where you cant do a thing and only function keys that do something are F2 and F12 (F12 - no boot options except setup, diag, boot mode). Than your  win8 probably encounterd error while updating or something. Only option now if you DIDN'T CREATE DELL RECOVERY DISC is to change motherboard (in my case dell tech is gonna do it tomorrow). If u do have recovery disc u can create new win8 instance from that disc (uefi boot secure boot off). Good luck hope it helps a bit.

I have the recovery disc, Dell didn't call me back on Saturday like they promised, the recovery disc won't boot.  I was able to re-install win8, but now once win 8 is running, my keystrokes beep and I can only load anything on manufacture's boot.  I'm still extremely disappointed in Dell.  To add insult to injury, they sent me the OS CD w/ Drivers for a different OS  (ie they sent me win8 CD and the drivers were for win7), and no Win 8 license code - which the tech said it "should be under the battery", it's not!  I was apprehensive about getting this laptop, and this exactly why. Dell techs, if you're going to contact me again, please be mindful of work hrs, and not being able to answer my personal number at work and my work number during non-regular hrs.  Dell has messed up so much with just me, it's unbelievable.

Hi all, bought my 17r se a week or so ago,had this boot prob,if yours does what mine did was splash screen for a few secs then blank screen,i then clicked the start button again to switch off, press start again, this time it boots fine.

I fixed mine by putting the cd/dvd drive first then the hdd second,it seemed that the boot works on the second try so being the hdd it boots ok.

Somewhere on the forum there is the procedure to do this properly but sorry i have now lost the link but it did require you to type in the dvd/cd into a blank box in the boot option, sorry wish i could remember where it was but its been done in the last few days so hopefully it may sort out your prob.

By doing what you have just mentioned, I get the black screen with the colorful writing that I have listed in previous posts.  Also the boot option, with the codes and what not (USB ODD) that you have to type in, boots the computer in manufacturer's boot mode and makes my keyboard keys beep when I type anything on it.

Hi this was the info i got to sort out my boot probs

A French technician told me how to solve my problem this morning, so I can't say if the result with your method would have been the same.

What I did is:

-Boot the computer, normally he will turned in black.

-In the second boot go on F2

-When you are in the Bios, Go to "BOOT"

-On the menu of "BOOT",  go to "SECURE BOOT"  and Put "Disabled"

-Access to "Add boot option" and press "ENTER"

- You'll have a new window on the middle, in "Boot option name", write  "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive"

- Tab and Press  "YES"

Now, you will have "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" written in the top of the list under "Boot Priority Order" and UEFI Boot

-Press F10 to save and exit. Normally the computer will reboot and you will have access to the Bios with F2 or F12 and  have "windows boot manager".

If I didn't miss a step, it will work for other customer, it worked for me.

In case, I have missed a step, I hope you will be able to change or rectify this method.

In other case, tell me, I could have access to my French contact.

@ CyberMaxX360; Let me know if this method has worked for you, just to know if there is other issues with the 7720.

Cheers

I have had this exact same issue on my Dell 17R SE Windows 8 laptop.  I have 10+ years experience building PCs, and this one took a while to figure out.  Hopefully this post helps some other folks.

Issue:

Upon pressing the power button, the system boots to the little Dell circle logo.  You notice a small amount of disk activity, then nothing.  Forever.  And ever.  I believe this is caused by the battery draining while the system is in a sleep/suspend/hibernate state.  The issue appears to have to do with the Win 8 UEFI secure boot (which I know nothing about yet).  My BIOS version is 'A10' on my 'Inspiron 7720'

Solution:

1.  With the computer off, press and hold the power button in the upper left hand corner of the keyboard.  This will turn the system on for a moment, then do a 'hard shutdown'.

2.  After the system is off, release the power button.

3.  Press the power button again to turn it on, but this time don't hold it down.

4.  As soon as the system starts to come up, press 'F2' repeatedly until you boot to the BIOS screen (blue, with a bunch of text)

5. Press the -> (right arrow) key until you get to the 'Boot' menu

6. Press the down arrow key until you get to the 'Secure Boot' option (how the hell do you make a down area key in a forum post anyway)

7. Press 'Enter', and change the 'Secure Boot' option to 'Disabled'

8. Now use the arrow keys (you are a pro now...speeding up here...hang with me) to navigate to the 'Load Legacy Option Rom' option and set it to 'Enabled'

9.  Use the -> (right arrow) key until you get to the 'Exit' menu

10.  Choose 'Exit Saving Changes'

Expected Result:

System now boots correctly.

Dell.....this is a serious issue you all really need to resolve.

Cheers.

Thank you so much - this has fixed the black screen issue for our 7720 !!

This problem started a month ago (laptop is 2 months old) - and after updating countless drivers I had just about resigned myself to the fact it will always take 2 boots to start from now on !

So you have made our day. :emotion-1:
