Inspiron 17r one month old wont boot beyond dell splash screen

Also the bios is locked & wont allow me to change boot order.

I have tried unplugging charger & battery & restarting.

Self doagnostic in bios does not highlight any issues

Any suggestions?

A13 bios is out now,if you can get to it, it may solve the access to the bios, but of course it needs to boot first.

I got operating system not found once when"playing" in the bios, uefi is more complex than the older bios used to be.

Yeah, I gave up trying to solve the issue, due to Dell's lack of competent-English-speaking tech help that respects people who hold normal (9am-5pm mon-fri) working hours and do not want to be bothered on a weekend, so instead I had them mail me a new OS disk for Win 8 and re-installed Win 8 on my system, before doing so, I took the Hard Drive Disk out, backed up the stuff I didn't wanna lose.  Then popped it back in re-installed windows, did NOT use the DELL Driver disk, because well, IT contained the bad BIOS update that locked the boot.  Instead installed the most current BIOS update from the mobo's manufacturer.... all in a day's work (good thing I earn salaried or else I'd be pissed - oh wait I am pissed that I had to spend all this extra time on such an amazing piece of machinery with crappy firmware).

Raioroja1, you need bios access in order to change your boot order, so that you can have it boot from the CD.  Your bios is what tells the motherboard to run your CD Drive or your HDD first, some of the times (ie in the crappy bugged out firmware update that led to this issue) the bios doesn't know to keep checking for a boot after the first device fails, hence you end up w/ a pretty expensive paper weight until you can find a solution.  Good Luck!

I got myself one of these little do-dads www.frys.com/.../4289084  and used it as an external harddrive to get my info from it, this wasn't the specific one I got, I got one that was a 3.0 USB... Once I knew I had what I wanted from the HDD I reinstalled the OS.  (I did have to use a different computer to save the data - in this case I used my work desktop and had an external drive to back up my data from the original HDD to).

I forgot what I typed in to get the boot to change into the CD, but when I get home I can try to look it up for you.

Santista, I know i need the bios now that the machine won't boot but i meant when i generally use a computer i never had to think about the bios

My bios A10 and when i try to add boot options it won't allow me, maybe its because i have to insert a CD/DVD when i'm trying to add such boot option i don't know i'll talk to the service center and see what they say my only worry is losing all my data can you please tell us how you backed up your stuff?

Hi guys, this is basically not a big issue, not even a motherboard problem, probably just a glitch that happens when running windows 8 updates.

I ran into this issue yesterday and I had no option but to fix it. It was more like I buy a pc for someone and receiving payment wont happen until the laptop is working good.

This was a 2 weeks old laptop brand new laptop that suddenly blacked out one day, I almost freeked out and lost my head and the client was putting massive pressure on me. After hours and hours of net research and support from the dell team. I almost called it quits when everything I tried was all in vain.

My head cracked and cracked as this was a nightmare for me. I am all the way in southern africa and i had no way to solve my problem by warranty as i purchased the 13z from ebay. I had a day... and only a day to solve this problem or else payment was going to be withdrawn. The last thing I wanted to hear was that i needed to replace the MB and that was out of the question, even though this was what I eventually got as an answer from Dell.

Determination is not overrated...Trust me guys. All you have to do is keep moving and moving, until you get it right. my 13z is perfectly ok and does not require a new MB neither do i think yours as well.

I am still drawing up a comprehensive answer to sort out this issue in my wordpad, i will post it, if this issue is still problem. just hit me up with a post

This is basically a Bios problem, nothing more. and i feel this could be caused by windows updates. here are the major steps to follow, this steps are being carried out on an alternative laptop,

1. Download latest Bios update for your laptop (you can follow the steps here)

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/550253/Dell-Inspiron-13z-5323.html?page=105#manual

2. Create a freedos bootable flash drive (you can find the steps on this link below)

http://www.howtogeek.com/136987/how-to-create-a-bootable-dos-usb-drive/

I used RUFUS, this is a very handy utility, download it here

http://rufus.akeo.ie/

Once you create the bootable disk, copy and paste the file, e.g the current Bios Update File for a 13z is 5323A18.exe from the dell drivers website. Paste the file in the root of the RUFUS bootable flash drive. e.g  E:/

It does not have to be in any folder.

DO NOT DELETE ANY FILES IN THE RUFUS BOOT DRIVE.

These are the 2 major steps to follow.

3. Plug the flash drive on the usb your malfunctioning laptop and turn on the laptop. Make sure you select to boot from the flash drive that you just plugged in, If not listed, make sure to select Legacy boot option and restart, usb should be there thereafter.

Once it boots from the flash drive, you will face a screen similar to that of a command prompt with C:/ address root

DO NOT WORRY IT IS NOT THE C:/ FOR YOUR FILES IN YOUR HARD DRIVE, JUST A TEMPORAL STORAGE

ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR POWER PLUGGED IN, YOU CANNOT UPDATE WITHOUT A POWER SOURCE ATTACHED

Now all you do is

in the black screen, type DIR, this will list down all the files in the flash drive, remeber we had placed the 5323A18.exe in the root of the flash drive, this will be listed down as well

NOW, type 5323A18.exe and press enter

This will start the BIOS update process.

Once this is done, Walaaaaaaaaa

Get into your Bios and make sure that it is updated and also check to see if your boot settings are set correctly. You could simply just restore default settings by pressing F9 and then saving and rebooting your machine.

THIS will solve your problem, no matter which dell machine you are using. If you haa a booting problem.

DONT WASTE YOU MONEY MAKING PHONE CALLS, THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO. PERIOD. AND DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING NEW MOTHERBOARDS. BE DETERMINED TO CONQUER THIS PROBLEM YOURSELF. IF I CAN SOLVE HIS PROBLEM IN A DAY, WHY CANT YOU???

STOP WASTING YOUR TIME RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS....

ALL THE BEST

Good evening, I have an Inspiron 14R 5420 and am suffering with the same problem.
I created the bootable usb, but when I choose Boot List option: legacy usb drive does not appear, so I noticed it tries to load the stick (led blinking) but then stops blinking.
Will my scenario was similar to what happened to you?

I have an Inspiron 17R, it's a few years old. I had upgraded to Win 10 a while back and it was working fine. I recently shut down the machine while it was apparently trying to do an update (my bad) and somehow got into this endless of misery "Preparing Automatic Repair" loop.

I have tried all manner of "fixes" nothing works. It doesn't matter what I do, how many times I power on/off, , battery in or out, F2 and F12  do nothing. So I had to take 20+ screws out, disconnect several ribbon cables, etc, in order to pull the coin battery to force the machine to finally take me to bios. I did this assuming that I could change the boot sequence to cd or usb, thus allowing me to re-install the system.

This lead to even more misery in that the bios fails to save (with a lengthy error msg) if I try to change anything to do with boot sequence. The boot sequence is stuck at 1st "windows boot manager", 2nd. "setup", then everything else. So yet another endless loop. There seems to be no way to force a change to boot to usb or cd.

It is as if this was "by design". The laptop, which was working fine, is now a useless brick.

I never imagined that "Windows" could actually make a machine completely inoperable... suxs

If anyone knows of a way around this, please leave a reply. FYI none of the previous suggestion work
