E6400 possible overheat issue. Immediate shutdown.

Question

My E6400 Atg has been shutting down on me at least once a day. I don't do any graphics, but I usually have a large text file open with about 6 pictures in it and I stream pandora constantly. Usually it is when I have a pop up accessing a remote database. It hangs up then poof.  Screen goes black.  When I hit power it starts to open, but then hard shuts down. When I feel the vent fan it is hot. Not super hot, but hotter than I think it should be. I have the system set for high power usage with the cpu fan set to active cooling. I have the processor set to minumum processor speed 50% max 100%. I have 4 gb ram, T9900 processor and a SSD hardrive. It was doing this last year, but only when I had it on a soft surface that restricted airflow.  Even then it was just slowing down drastically and would resolve itself once I took off my lap or what ever soft surface it was on. What do you think?

I recommend you to flash BIOS from the following link:

Note: While flashing BIOS connect the Ac adapter and make sure the battery has minimum 15% charge as this needs uninterrupted power supply. Do not use the system till it restarts and comes up to the desktop.

Next update the video drivers from the link below:

Click the on the link, select the ‘Operating system’ from the drop down list and then click on ‘Video’. Update the appropriate video driver from the list. The system is shipped with integrated Intel graphics card and NVidia card. Update both the video drivers and restart the system after each driver update.

Please let me know the status of the system after these updates.

It changed my performance index.

on on processor and memory it went from 5.8 to 6.3 which is good!

Graphics stayed the same.

Disk transfer rate went 7.1 to 6.9 which bad, but that's still pretty darn fast.

I will try to reproduce the circumstances around the shut downs and report back here.

Well those updates increase my processor index score by .5 and my ram score by .5 and decreased my SSD by .3, but its at 6.9 so thats still darn fast.

I have still experienced the instant shut down. It often is preceeded by my opening a pop-up that pulls up maps or accesses a database or starting a video.

I had changed my firewall settings a week ago to work faster with some software I use, but I changed them back to default because the speed increase was nominal.

I went to bleepingcomputer dot com and downloaded. JRT junkware removal tool:

I ran combofix and I don't have the log.

I have paid Malware bytes and that found 3 trojans.

It still shuts down instantly on occassion.  It doesn't really seem to have much to do with the heat of the processor.  I tried a laptop cooler.  Doesn't make any difference.

Thank you for the update. I suggest that you run virus scan to rule out any virus infection. In case there is no infection, I recommend you to restore the system to factory installed state from the link below:

Back up the data before performing PC restore. In case the issue persists even after restoring the system to factory installed state, I suspect the issue may be with the heatsink and fan or even the motherboard.

My daughter's E6400 have always overheated since we received it from Dell. It gets so hot she cannot use if on her lap and it shuts down without any warning. The fan comes on within minutes of booting the machine.

We sent it back to Dell years ago and they told us there is nothing wrong with it. We got a new laptop for her.

I have the E6400 now and did a clean reinstall, flashed the bios and try to update all drivers. The intel graphics driver will will not install, saying the system does not meet min requirement (log below). The Graphics performance for Windows Aero is 3.3!

It still overheats and shuts down without warning.
