I think that's how it determines the difference between "Communications Headset" being plugged in and Activated as well as how that JimCo screen determines that your using it where by it will then mute other sounds. Just a hunch on how I think it may work. I need a new headset/mic combo myself anyways - been using the Onboard MIC get feedback myself and folks here the keys being pounded away when I type.
he headphones worked i think for a day or 2 before finding out that my friends on the end of my calls were complaining that they could hear everything that i should be hearing. EG: i would be on a skype/ventrilo/teamspeak call but they would hear my game sound or my music that only i should be hearing through my headset.
Would it help to use this feature on the Communication tab of the Sound properties?
Right Click the Windows 8 Speaker Icon in the lower right tray (next to the time/date)
Select "Recording Devices"
Right Click the "Stereo Mix" device and select "Disable"
NOTE: You may want to check off the options 'Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices" while your there so if you want to go back to enable it, it's easier to locate.
No speakers, i have tried jack headset, usb headset, purely because i thought the internal mic was faulty. All 3 options don't work properly,
With my previous laptop i had some annoying windows sound program that came with it and i had the similar problem but i couldn't change the default sound device, after i uninstalled it the problem was solved, but since this is windows 8 i cannot uninstall this "Dell Audio" program in windows which i suspect is the route of the problem.
Thanks Again
( i might have been given a faulty Dell which is beyond inconvenient now as i cannot live without my workstation for weeks to get it sent somewhere.)
Nope - do you have sound via the laptop speakers turned on while on VOIP?
Is it possible that the MIC is supersensitive?
Maybe, perhaps cover the MIC up real good and do a test to see if it's the MIC or if it's the hardware actually bleeding in the sound.
I find the IDT sound drivers - driving me crazy as well. Sometimes I jack headsets in and it cancels the speakers as it should other times it doesn't. I thought it used to prompt me as well asking what was jacked into the Headset Jack at one point now it doesn't. The Line IN jack still prompts me for what type of device was jacked in though IE: Mic or Line In.
It's going to come down to playing around with the Windows 8 Audio Properties, I see applications now even have their own volume levels in the Windows 8 mixer - then again this may have been in Vista/Win 7 as I came off of XP to 8 LOL.
EDIT: You may want to play around with those check boxes for each device in the "Recording" Tab and disable "Listen to Device" in their properties.
Thanks or the response, but i have tried that before and just tried again. The voip contact can still hear my output sound as if its going into my mic -no effect.
Jack closet to front bezel one with the Headphone Icon - it's a "Stereo Headphone/Speaker/Microphone Combo Jack"
Jack behind that towards the Back that's just a Mic/Line In Jack.
Using a modern Communications Headset 1 jack that the speaker wires and mic wire all connected to one plug - it should be plugged into the front jack.
See the 17R SE 7720 Setup Guide here (need real adobe acrobat to use this guide as it's interactive - find the page for the left hand side, then click on the option in the left panel that states Audio Ports to see the description.
EDIT: OK FTP linking doesn't work - use your "My Dell Support Center" application, go to "Owners Manual" look at the "Specifications" document.
I don't think it's faulty - I think it's just convoluted drivers that's all. And I'm pretty sure it has something to do with that IDT Stereo Mix Device, and the "Listen to Device" check boxes. I recall something along these lines myself played around with that IDT Driver for ages. But here's a post that shows someone trying to do the opposite of what you are trying that is , they actually wanted to have the MIC plus Sounds from Applications going thru the same time and mixed. Perhaps do what they did but backwards, disable what they said to enable? ? www.sevenforums.com/.../142176-stereo-mix-how-record-microphone-music.html
Hmm well if i go to: Playback- and my jack headphones are plugged in, the Speakers/Headphones device is the default and "Communications Headphones" is disabled.. Could this be a clue ? (when i try enable the communications headphones i get a cross over my speaker icon in the tray on windows 8)
I am going to play round with that forumpost thankyou)
See that Screen Shot that was posted by JimCo above that Tab is supposed to work like this. When you use Skype or the likes you should be able to select "Communications Headphones" OH WAIT what jack are you using for your Communications Head Set??? The Left FOREMOST jack or the one further back. Use the one at the very front towards the bezel not the LINE IN/MIC jack. When you jack a headset with mic into that front jack the "Communications Device" will enable. From Skype you should select that one, and then under that tab Jimco has posted - Select the option to what you want/ 80% quite or 50% quite or Mute all other Sounds or Do Nothing.
the headphones i am currently using have 2 seperate jacks.. i have tried a usb device a while ago, are you implying i need to try one with 1 jack for both ?

Ok so i made this post 2 months ago, and i have had one response? Is this the only support for dell products ?
I have now paid for a tech support to have a look and they dont know the problem, bought a new headset and no solution.
Do i have to send my workstation in to dell ? And not have a workstation for a period of time all because i bought a faulty laptop ?
In help would be appreciated as its almost 4 months i have had the machine not fully functional.

@benzorat0r
Go to Windows 8 "Desktop" Mode.
See if that resolves your issue.
Cheers

Ahhh - actually yes 2 jacks BUT....

i only have 1 jack for mic and 1 for headset ? Your last post was very confusing.
-I have tried what jimco stated which didn't change anything.
-I only have 2 jacks on the left of my laptop 1 for mic 1 for headset.
