Hi Rich-C,

I apologize. The part numbers given earlier were for Inspiron 5520.

Inspiron 5720 cannot be installed with a backlit keyboard.

Hi Rich-C,

Yes, Inspiron 5520 and Inspiron 7720 were tested on both normal and backlit keyboard. You can change the normal keyboard with a backlit keyboard.

Here is the part number for the backlit keyboard for Inspiron 7720: 70YXN and Inspiron 5520: T5M02, you can contact dell spares to purchase, please refer this link: http://dell.to/W9eQRg

Please reply for any further help.

When I called Dell with the above part numbers, I was told there is no compatible backlit keyboard for the 5720!

Who is correct, you or they?

I see this is an old post, but with so many used laptops changing hands on the "auction" sites, this question may still be relevant..  Here is the answer...  There are two different motherboard types for the Dell Inspiron 5720 (the regular type and the "SE" type), neither of which have the required secondary ribbon cable connection for the backlit keyboard.  Only the Dell Inspiron 7720 will support the backlit keyboard (which also has two types of motherboards, both of which have the secondary keyboard ribbon cable).  In other words, Dell Inspiron 5720 has no backlit keyboard option and the Dell Inspiron 7720 does include the backlit keyboard option.
