Hello.

I placed a post on Dec 31/12 . I had exact same  problem with my dell Inspriron 15R  7520 , I purchased online on  Dec 28/2012

Eventually I was able to create a complete set of recovery discs after two days of trying , called to technical support help from Dell (without success).

I was about to call Dell and return the laptop . I wasted enough time for what it should be a simple process.

Here are the steps that I went through -  I don't know if this will work for your system.

1. Based on forum support, first I updated the bios to the latest version (from A04 to A07 for 15R 7420) ,  I noted that the bios update modified  the DVD hardware component  (before the update was Mashuta DVD , after the bios update , it has no specific name associated with the DVD drive ).

2.  After the update of bios, when I tried  to go through the create recovery disc,  I could not click on the START button to  create the DVD. I tried various times and still did not work. Very frustrating!

3.I then disabled the blue tooth , still not working

4. I then decided to remove anti virus software ,   I completely uninstalled the antivirus software that comes with the laptop.

5. After that,  I retried and process went through creating the recovery discs (3 disc) successfully.  Please note when dell recovery software prompted you to put in a next disc, just put in the disc - DO NOT click OK  and the process will finalize the second then the final disc.   . Also do not use blue ray, RW type of disc.

It seems like the bios update in step 1 and step 5 helped me to complete the recovery disc.

PS -  I hope this helps (at your own risk).  Happy new year !

had the same problem with a brand new Dell Inspiron 17R-7720 while making the "Factory Backup" using "Dell backup and Recovery". the notebook refused to accept the second DVD and kept on ejecting it.

i took up the issue with my dealer as it was a brand new notebook.  No program had been installed. No changes made whatsoever.

he called up Dell support.
they told him to disable and uninstall McAfee, and before doing this make some changes in the User account:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts
Change User Account Control settings >
Never notify

But uninstalling McAfee had no effect. the problem was still there.

he called up Dell support again, this time they checked the notebook online and found no problem. then they recommended to download a new version of "Dell backup and Recovery":

http://www.dellbackupandrecovery.com/en-us/Index.html

Downloaded a 205 mb Setup.exe file
Uninstalled the old version and Installed the new version, an additional icon of "Dell Backup and Recovery" was created in the Desktop view.

ran the Dell Backup program again.
Recovery Media > Factory Backup
This time when he selected Discs option and inserted a 4.7 GB DVD, the application told that 3 DVDs will be required:

DVD +-RW
DVD (x3)
Amount of data 8.25 GB

earlier in the older version, no information was given as to how many DVDs will be required.

Success at last. 3 DVDs burnt and verified.

i'm very happy that i bought a DELL notebook. Dell support is world class :)

ps. After doing all this don't forget to return the User settings to default:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts
Change User Account Control settings >
Notify me only when apps try to make changes to my computer (default)

my dealer says that McAfee will be reloaded by Dell on my notebook soon.

i hope this helps :)

I cant believe you have to do all that to get Dell software to work.  It seems that nothing was tested with Windows 8 before shipping out to customers.

Very disappointed with the service so far from Dell

hi,

i feel it was just a small software related problem, and it got rectified quite quickly on the same day, within about 4-5 hours. The hardware is fine...
i have had worse experiences with support people of other companies.. Dell support for me was quite good.

i think you only have to download the new version of "Dell backup and Recovery".
uninstall the older version and install the new one.

if needed disable and uninstall McAfee..

the User setting are required to change only so that you don't get many dialog boxes asking you to confirm the changes being made..

but i certainly would not recommend doing it on your own. Don't make changes without the consent of Dell.. my dealer did everything according to the advice of Dell support. This way you don't lose the warranty.

Hello  -   i forget to mention in my previous post that  the Dell Backup and recover software was updated to the latest version on Dec 31/2012  by the Dell customer support . But it did not work . It created the first disk and kept ejecting the second disk, I tried many  times.

After that i did

Bios update - did not work, could not click on start button to initiate the task, tried  several times, different discs.

Remove Antivirus -  strangely,  i complete the recovery disks ( 3discs)  successfully

Perhaps  -  (potentially combination of bios + dell recovery software + antivirus  software ) depending on  the model of laptop.

It is best to call Dell to assist with software , especially now there has been some success creating  the recovery discs.

This is basic and simple task, which i wasted 2 full days , and a dozen incomplete DVD in garbage.   I am usually very busy and dont have luxury spending 2 days on the lap top.  However, the hardware and performance of the computer looks good  , espcially the LCD screen has a solid frame around it which i like very much.   Hopefully, the hardware will stand up with time.

I called and explained I wasn't able to make recovery disks, and they very quickly sent me a couple of DELL DVDs.

So the customer service is responsive ( at least for customers in Canada), if you ask for it...

I have to agree with bibix's  assessment: DELL is putting together great hardware packages, but their software universe ( drivers, bloatware, OS ) is a real mess. Happily I am tech savvy enough to manage the software by myself, and I feel sorry for those who have to rely on what DELL gives them 'off the shelf'.

I'm just very very thankful that my machine came with A10 BIOS  - and not the dreaded A11 and A12 packages that lock you out of the BIOS altogether!

Hi,

Would recommend  to perform the Windows 8 updates before creating a recovery image for the system.

If the issue still persists, please send me the system Service Tag and the present BIOS version, in a private message and I will be glad to assist you.

Add me as a friend by clicking on my name Priyanka.

Thanks and Regards

Having the same issue with Dell ONE XPS 2710.

I tried updating the BIOS to A09 (from A06) and also the Dell Backup 7 Recovery to 1.0.0.4 (from 1.0.0.1)

But same problem, creates the first DVD and then hangs on the second DVD and never finishes.

The application will not "cancel" and the computer must be force shut down. Then rebooted again to get control of the DVD unit.

I haven't tried disabling the Bluetooth, as some have said, and the only anti-virus is the Windows Defender (which is Security Essentials). I don't know why those would cause this problem.

This is really poor.

update.

Still no luck, but tried all the options I could including:

1. disable Bluetooth

2. disable real time scanner on Security Essentials

3. disable Account Control prompts

4. run Dell Backup as Administrator

did exactly the same, creates the first DVD and writes to the second DVD but hangs and never finishes.

junk!

I noticed that for the 7720 they have released a new BIOS version A12, does this update address the issue of recovery creation?

I have already wasted  2 months working with this issue with technical support and well over 25 dvd-r disks and still no resolution.

why release your hardware with Windows 8 if it has not been tested for functionality and compatibility with your hardware.

I bought a laptop 12/2011 and it is the 14 inch. I made recovery disks but when I tried to go thru the Windows backup and recovery it would not let me backup and stated there was no room on the hard drive to back up. Since I was able to make an account with the Dell Online Backup thought I could use this for backup. Wrong!.

6 months later when the Brother printer CS person was walking me through installing their printer my dell laptop dropped my entire OS system and started in DOS then stated it could not read a single program because it was trying to run everything in DOS. The brother printer CS person told me I had to contact Dell and I did because when I put in the recovery disks that I made (2) they did not work.

Dell India sent the Windows disk and I made an appointment with Tech to have them walk me through installing the W7 disk they sent.

They did not call and I waited two days. no call.

I then put in the recovery disk they sent and the factory OS wasn't like anything I originally had.

After I got the laptop to open windows I saw that I now had two OS's on the hard drive .

I am disabled and did not have days to be on the phone because Dell could not fix all the problems (software & hardware) that I told the CS person that I wrote Corporate Headquarter with a long list of problems and to send me mailing instructions to return. I have a degree in computers before personal pc's and knew it was hardware and software but they did not reply to a single letter for a return.

My touchpad also changes windows sizes over and over and several other issues that Dell would not respond or send mailing label to return under warranty and I also sent to Walmart corporate copies of all the letters sent to Dell Corp regarding returning under warranty and I would not pay for a laptop that drops the entire OS trying to install a printer!

This is why you buy things with a credit card. The reply from Walmart was just that "I had use of the card" therefore, they still wanted me to pay for this piece of junk!

I told Walmart along with Dell Corp if they do not honor their warranty I do not have to honor the charges on my Walmart cart and they could cancel the whole card!

This is how Corps operate! It was obvious that my laptop needed to be fixed with hardware and software hard drive allocation problems  and after looking at forums they have a problem.

I also was not able to use their "Dell Online Backup" is useless

Do not use Dell Online Backup expecting that you can retrieve anything because you cannot!

Will not every buy Dell again because they do not honor anything and cannot send a mailing label under warranty.

"I noticed that for the 7720 they have released a new BIOS version A12, does this update address the issue of recovery creation?" -  according to the release notes, it does not, and I personally suspect that it cannot (very probably it's a flaw in the application, and has nothing to do with the machine BIOS)

In any event you are advised to AVOID the 7720 BIOS A12 release , as it's anecdotally well known to have a fatal side effect ( it can lock you out of the BIOS screen altogether...)

What BIOS version did you update to?  What drivers did you update?  In order to get this to work.
