I had to replace the mother board on mine. It sounds like yours is doing the same thing mine did, I would suggest replacing it yourself if possible or if you are unable to find someone who can it is very easy to replace. Also you will need a new dvd player it sounds like yours is no good. But who ever fixes your pc should be able to confirm whether it is good or bad.

I hope this helps

You can find the mother board online for about $150 and 20 for a DVD Rom Drive

Good Luck

Hi dotcom1,

The problem could be with the hardware or software of the computer

Running the hardware diagnostics can help in checking if there is any hardware problem. Follow the steps below to run hardware diagnostics.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping the F12 key on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. From the One time boot menu select Diagnostics and Press Enter.
  4. It runs a test on all the hardware components.
  5. If it test fails please capture the error code and let me know the error code, I would tell you the next course of action.

In case the test passes, follow the next steps. Check in Safe Mode with Networking.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Keep tapping F8 on the Dell Logo Screen.
  3. Once the computer enters Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode with Networking.
  4. Press Enter.

Check if the computer is doing the same thing in safe mode with networking.

Please reply with results.

Thanks for the reply, can't get into the bios - tried that already. Just  a black screen from the minute the power button is pressed sadly.

Hi dotcom1,

Please run the LCD BIST on the laptop to check if there is any problem with the LCD screen.

 To initiate LCD BIST:

  • Connect the AC adapter to your computer.
  • Hold the letter <D> on your keyboard and then turn on your computer.
You will see four colors (grey, red, green, and blue) on the screen in a sequence.

If you see any colors on the screen the LCD screen is fine.

Try to run the PSA diagnostics to check all the hardware functionality of the system , as you are not able to see anything on the screen launch the PSA by holding and power on the laptop.

As the laptop power button is on, the laptop is receiving the power but not able to display anything.

Check if the computer is giving out any beep sounds, and make a note of the beeps and post the beep count.

Please reply for further help.

i tried holding the letter D, nothing comes on the screen - the laptop remains silent and there is no beeps at start up. I can't run the PSA diagnostics because nothing comes up on the screen

Hi dotcom1,

I would like to know the color and status of the power but light, is it ON/OFF/ Blinking?

If the power button light is ON please connect an external motor to a laptop and switch it on. Try to switch the display to external monitor and check if the laptop displays anything on the monitor.

Please post the results.

Thanks for the Reply.

When I press the power button - the power light, hard drive and bluetooth light come on - then the hard drive light switches off and just remains the power and bluetooth light.

The do not blink, just solid blue lights. I have tried connecting to screen but nothing happens at all.

I just bought a different screen fitted it and still the same thing - it powers for about 2 seconds with the fan then silent with a black screen.

Any thing else?

Hi dotcom1,

It appears to be a hardware problem; I would like confirm that AC Adapter was connected to the laptop while performing all these tests.

If not, please leave the laptop connected to the AC adapter for an hour to charge the battery and then try the tests. (It could be a low battery issue).

If Ac adapter was already connected to the laptop during the tests, then the issue is with the hardware (motherboard/Dc-In port) of the laptop which needs to be replaced.

I have same exact model and same exact problem, but when I hold "D" and power up, I get the four colors on the screen.  Also when I hold "ALT" and power on, the Num lock and Caps lock blink, and the Scroll light is a solid color.  Also the power light, Bluetooth light, and dvd drive light all stay a solid color.

Hi goldslag,

Based on the issue description, the problem could be with the video card.

If the video card is not integrated on the motherboard, replacing the video card should fix the problem.

Thanks for the response.  I was a little confused, because when I took the machine apart, the only video card I found was integrated on the motherboard.  The motherboard is a MY334. I have also seen that MY554 has been used in this machine.  So now my question is, is this the right motherboard for this machine.  I had it professionally replaced once, and am now thinking they put in a different motherboard.

Hi goldslag,

MY334, MY554 and WK083 are compatible motherboard part numbers for the Inspiron 1721. These motherboards have integrated video card on them. If the system has MY334, please replace it with the same.

Please contact Dell out of warranty team for purchasing the right motherboard

Hi, The same thing happened to my computer. (The computer tried to start and then when to a black screen with a blinking white line). I ran the test like you told him in the first set of instructions. (Pressed F12, and did the diagnostic). The first run showed all passing. When prompted to run the thorough test I said yes. I then showed an error: Error 2000-0142 Validation -33830 Hard drive 0- s/n wd--wxh1e31csa23 status 77 Can you please tell me what type of hardware problem I have. Thanks!
