I just receive the unit.  I know that the problem has been showing in Europe and some units in the US.   Dell has a special keyboard to solve the problem.

I only need the P/N or the way to buy the keyboard that solve the problem.

Let me know.

Hi Patrick,

I would like to know if the Keyboard behavior changed after any hardware or software changes.

I also request you to run diagnostics on the keyboard. To run diagnostics restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F12 key every two seconds. This will start the One-time boot menu. Using arrow keys select ‘Diagnostics’ and hit enter. This will run diagnostics on the hardware components of the system which may take around 5 minutes.  Next Press N for no when it asks you to continue Memory test.

Next the option listed will be: ‘Test Memory’, ‘Test System’ and Exit. Please select ‘Test System’.  Then there will be option to run ‘Express test’, ‘Extended Test’, ‘Custom Test’ and ‘Symptom Tree’. Select Custom test and click on keyboard and pointing devices and hit enter. Reply with the status of the test for further assistance.

In case you are unable to run custom test on the Keyboard, restart the system and Dell logo tap F8 key every two seconds to get ‘Advanced Boot option’. Select ‘Command prompt’ and type the letters in this window and check the status.

Please reply with the status for further assistance.

Hi Patrick,

Before replacing any part, we will have to check the cause for this issue.

Please follow the below given steps:

Click Start > Control Panel > Region and Language and in this window navigate to Keyboard and Languages tab and click ‘Change Keyboard’ button. There will be several languages listed under ‘Installed Services’. Please select the language you do not use or not required and then click Remove. Likewise remove all the unwanted languages and check the keys functionality.

I also request you check keyboard functionality in Command prompt. For that restart the system and at the Dell logo tap the F8 key every two seconds. In the ‘Advanced Boot Option’ window using down or up arrow key highlight ‘Repair your Computer’ and hit enter. Select the keyboard layout and click on ‘Next’. On the ‘System recovery Option’ menu click on ‘Command prompt’ to open it.

Use your keyboard in this window to check if it works fine. In case the keyboard works fine, the issue is with the Operating system. You may have to back up all the data on the system and reinstall the operating system. If the keyboard does not work even at command prompt, you may consider replacing the keyboard.

The problem is not on windows, I already check the configuration on the control pannel and was the right US Kyeboard.  I also check the 2 keyboards on DOS prompt (MS-DOS) and the units have the same problem that the letters were shift.

This is a problem well documented and requiered an special Keyboard from Dell.  I need the P/N of the keyboard that will work properly with my two units.

Thanks for your help.

I already changed the keyboard twice withn the same results.   This is a problem that Dell had with some of the units of Vostro 1510 and 1310 that requiere an special keyboard.

Do you have that P/N?

Txks

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for the trouble shooting steps done. Since the test in command prompt also failed, as you mentioned the keyboard may need replacement.

The part number for the keyboard is J483C. In case you belong to US region, spare parts contact number is 800-372-3355 and Out of warranty department number is 800-288-4410. In case you belong to a different region, kindly reply to this post, to assist you with the contact information.

I have the same problem as you guys, I have the Vostro 1510 and my motherboard was recently replaced, then the last line keys of my keyboard were all changed.

In short, the SOLUTION is: I'll have to run a debugger file that DELL sent me. Important: the debugger works only on Windows Vista.

The name of the file is

WinKBSel1004.exe

and it must be executed under some instructions of which I still don't know. I'm going to work on this issue only tomorrow together with the DELL support people. After this, I post here the results (if you guys want the file, I can send: bmodenesi@gmail.com).

If you want to know some explications about this issue, apparently it is a problem due to BIOS configuration, which is messed up, so this debugger is going to correct this.

What DELL did and DIDN'T WORK:

- update the BIOS

- change the keyboard
