No Audio Output Device is installed

Hello,

My sound was working fine until recently when my laptop was struggling to start up Windows.  I tried selecting the startup option "Last known working configuration" (or similar) , which fixed my startup problems, but ever since that point, I have had no sound on my laptop.

If I place my cursor over the sound icon in the taskbar, it says "No Audio Output Device is installed".

The Device Manager shows currently that there are the following sound devices:

   ATI High Definition Audio Device

   IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

both of these have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark within their icons.

It is a Studio 1558 (64 bit) laptop running Windows 7.

Could you please suggest how I might go about getting my sound back?

Cheers,

Simon.

Hi Simon,

You may install the audio drivers for your computer from the link: http://dell.to/SCKDWF

Steps to download driver:

  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

Please share the findings.

Hi Chinmay,

I did what you suggest above and after the reboot, a Troubleshooter was launched.  I followed it right through to the end and the problem was not resolved.

Relative to my original post, nothing has changed.  The "No Audio Output Device is installed" is still there and both of the sound devices still have a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark within their icons in Device Manager.

Hi Simon,

You may uninstall and then re-install the audio drivers from 'Device Manager' by following the steps below:

  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Sound Video and Game controllers”, you will find the Audio driver listed.
  • Right click on it and click on “uninstall”. (Check and make a note of the driver installed on your system and re-install the driver from the below steps accordingly).
  • Check the box to delete the software.
  • Uninstall the IDT application from control panel.
  • Restart your system and click on the link: http://dell.to/SCKDWF
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Install the audio driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Restart your computer.

If the issue persists, paste the screenshot of 'Device Manager'.

Please share the findings.

I have done this and the only thing that I noticed different is that the message at the taskbar sound icon changed to "The audio service is not running" while the installation of the audio drivers was taking place, before the second restart.  After the 2nd restart, the message had gone back to "No Audio Output Device is installed", as before.

The screendump of the Task Manager looks as follows:

The end result - yet again, no change.   :o(

Is there any way I can reinstall Windows 7 without doing a complete refresh?  I.e. reinstall it without affecting any data or programs?

You don't get any audio, but your problem may not be with the audio driver.  Your Radeon video card has audio components (hence the ATI video driver).  Try to install in the following order:

* Intel Chipset

* IDT HD Audio

* ATI Video Card (it looks like there is a conflict between the two audio devices, hence the bang)

Hi Simon,

You may install the drivers in following order from the links below:

If the issue persists, you may also try the Microsoft Fix it from link: http://bit.ly/JvQScV

Click on 'Run Now' and follow the prompts on screen.

If the issue still persists, you can try a system restore and restore it to the date prior this issue occurred. All the data on computer will be safe but the applications that you have installed after that restore point, you might need to re-install it.

Open System Restore by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type System Restore --> Click it. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Follow the prompts to choose a restore point and restore your computer.

If the issue persists, you may restore your computer to default factory settings. This step will lead to data (pictures, documents, programs, music) loss. Please perform a data backup prior to this step. Please disconnect any external peripherals (printer, scanner or any USB device) as well.  For more information on this, you may refer to link: http://dell.to/WWqBKe

Please reply for further clarifications.
