XPS One 27, Windows Media Center 8, not playing HDCP?

I have a new XPS One 27 touchscreen operating on Windows 8 with Media Center. It is using the Intel HD Graphics 4000 adapter as primary and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M as the secondary display adapter. All drivers and software are current. I am using a networked Silicon Dust HD HomeRun Prime with a Verizon FIOS CableCard to receive and play/record live TV on a wired Gb LAN via an unmanaged switch. The issue is that I cannot play HDCP (specifically HBO), receiving a "Display driver error- the video playback device does not support playback of protected content". In exploring solutions to this problem it came to light that WMC will not support DisplayPort or non-HDPC displays when playing copy protected content. I am able to successfully play HBO on my home-built Windows 8 with WMC PC that has an external monitor. Does the XPS One 27 use an internal DisplayPort for connecting the display? Is the XPS One 27 touchscreen display HDPC compliant? Thanks for your help!

Brian,

I just got the XPS 2710 (Windows 8) last week and ran into the same issue. Thanks to your post I was able to get it somewhat working. From my testing, it seems that any UAC prompt will cause the live tv to start working. Even if you click on "NO" to the UAC prompt, live tv will start working. So basically it has nothing to do with Intel Rapid Storage application, just the UAC prompt when you try to open it will make live tv work.

A quicker way to get live tv working for me is to open WMC Live Tv in windowed mode which will give the error, but then as soon as I expand it to full screen, the channels will work. So its definately a software issue somewhere. Hopefully Dell can find a permanent fix for this.

Also, in case anyone is getting flickering black on live tv for certain channels, you can try the following to fix that issue. Right click on windows desktop, go into the settings for your HD4000. Go to Media, then Image Enhancement, and uncheck the Adaptive Contrast Enhancement.

Hope this helps.

I just bought an XPS One 27 and have the same problem with HD Homerun and WMC, except that none of the suggested solutions work for more than a moment (UAC prompt, starting in a window and then going full screen). I am ready to pull my hair out - we bought this to replace an old HP TouchSmart that worked great. It's a kitchen computer and watching TV is one of the primary usages. This Dell is useless for this.

Has anyone come up with any other ideas?

I would say to make sure you have the updated drivers from Dell and latest bios. Nothing else that I can think of that would make a difference.

This is an issue in Windows Media Center that Dell and MS need to resolve.  WMC does not recognize DisplayPort connections (which presumably the XPS One is using internally to connect the display) as a protected display path, even if they are HDCP compliant.  The only workaround is to use a monitor connected via DVI.

My suggestion would be that either you return the PC and purchase one that does not use DisplayPort, or contact Dell and MS and push them to fix this issue.

I just received my XPS 27 with the Nviada display card. I installed Window 8 Pro with Media Center.

I had the Display Driver error mentioned here when trying to watch Live TV.  This is a real bummer. Media Center was one of the prime uses intended for this machine. It was to replace my old HP Media deskside machine which was 6 yrs old or so.

I spent for hours last night making sure that all the drivers were up to date and all software was up to date.

I finally got it "sort of working"...  I found that after I started Live TV and receive the driver error that if I down sized from Full screen to a window of some size it would begin to work. It even seemed to work the other way around that is to say if I started live TV in a Window and then got the Driver Error I could get it to work by full screening it.  In short, this is not acceptable to me for a maching that cost over $2000.

I spent litterally 4 hours on the phone with Dell today working on this problem. 2 hrs of working with the software people and trying to make them understand what the problem was. They then transfered me to the Hardware people. He was convinced that the Driver was the problem so we tried to uninstall all the graphics drivers Intel 4000 and the Nvidiva 640 driver. We could uninstall both but when we rebooted they both came back again.

The latest attempt is to start over from scratch. I am restoring my machine to factory setting (takes about 4 hrs or so for the utility to reset everything). I will then install Win 8 Pro. Then I will uninstall both drivers again Intel and Nvidia (hopefully they will stay uninstalled this time) . I will then download the Intel Driver from Dell and install.  Next will be the Nvidia driver from them directly.

Well we will see if that works. I suspect it will not but it seems to be the only way to satisfy them that the problem is in the driver/WMC interface.

If I can not get this working correctly, I will return the machine.. Too bad, It is really nice otherwise.

Been there, done that.  The problem seems to be with WMC, not Dell drivers.  The instructions and advice for installing WMC to use an HDHomeRun Prime (or other cablecard ad-on cards or devices for that matter) describe the need to minimize then maximize the WMC window to get rid of the display driver error.  Of bigger concern is the frequently mentioned problem the WMC's lack of proper support for cpmputers using DisplayPort, whereby protected content like HBO and other premium pay channels cannot be displayed unless you attach an external monitor.  This affects most computers with attached displays like laptops, and apparently, the XPS One 27.  Don't blame Dell, except for their apparent lack of knowledge of these issues and the inability to confirm that the XPS One 27 actually does use DisplayPort.

Check this out: www.missingremote.com/.../override-digital-cable-advisor-windows-media-center-7

I have a different Windows 7 machine with only a VGA port. I ran the batch file provided on that site as admin, and I was able to watch protected live tv on WMC over the VGA port.

I thought it may work for our XPS One 27 on Windows 8 but it didnt work for me. Does anyone get the display driver error with Windows 7 installed? If you want to, you can try dualbooting with Windows 7 and see if you get the error. If you still get the error in windows 7, run the batch file on the windows 7 install and see if live tv works without error after that.

On a related note, I use this addon to add channel logos and more channels on the guide screen. http://www.mychannellogos.com/

Thought you guys might find it useful.

That would not resolve the issue posts in this thread

It wont resolve the issues for Windows 8, but I don't see why the batch file wouldn't make it work in Windows 7 as it makes WMC think it passed the Digital Cable check. Whenever I get some free time I will try with Windows 7 on my XPS One 27 and see the results.

This will not work on any version of Windows.  The problem the OP is experiencing has nothing to do with passing the DCA.  A machine that passes the DCA still will not play protected digital cable content if Windows Media Center does not identify a display path as protected.

Dell support is trying to duplicate this error in their lab. I appreciate their effort but I suspect that they will not be able to fix the problem since to me, it appears to be the DisplayPort problem and WMC not properly recognizing the problem. Seems like this problem has been around for quite some time and with media center not even being packaged with the standard Windows 8 product it will most likely not be any kind of priority to MicroSoft to fix since it apprears to be their problem.  I have been told by Dell Support they will get back to me tomorrow with their results and if they can not fix the problem I may need to return the Machine.  Really too bad, it is a great machine otherwise. I am disappointed.  I will update this file with the results of Dell Supports efforts.

Dell will need to use a CableCARD-enabled tuner (like a Ceton InfiniTV) with a CableCARD in it and tune to a CCI 0x02 (Copy Once) channel.  It should reproduce at that point.  A ClearQAM/OTA tuner will not repro it.

well. I am hoping that they understand that I am trying to watch Cable TV using a Cable card device  ( my device is a Haupauge 2650.  I am wondering if they can really reproduce the problem with the cable content in India or where ever their lab is.  I could demonstrate the problem with the support person while they were remotely logged into the my machine. but for them to reproduce it will be a different story

I think since basically the All in One is really a laptop mother board that the display adapters are VERY limited and obviously the display monitor itself is already set as a part of the all in one there will be no options.  Oh well. I guess I may need to go back to a desk top/desk side machine with more display options. We will see shortly.

You will need to get Dell to lean on MS *HARD* to get any progress.  I chased this down a year ago with MS and they refused to fix it, but did publish this KB article: support.microsoft.com/.../2392252

Dell Support called me back tonight.  The confirmed that this is a "glitch" with Microsoft Media Center and the handling of the Display Port. I was told that Microsoft has accepted the this as a problem. No telling when Microsoft will fix the problem and unfortunately no way to track the problem. I will wait a few weeks to see if anything breaks loose.
