Well I just got off the phone with the return department and will be getting a refund once they receive the system. I see that on the US Dell website they no longer have the 17R SE with the 900p screen (Maybe because that display is awful).

My current system has an i5-3210m, with 900p display, and 1TB HDD for $899. I even tried to see if they would let me exchange my current system for the configuration now shown on the Dell website (i5-3230m, with 1080p, and 750GB HDD, also $899). However after being on hold for around 45 minutes they said it has to be the exact same system with the exact same components. I guess they saved me by not letting me get another one, how does that old saying go? Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

On the bright side I get to close my Dell Preferred Account.

I've also concerned about the apparent backlight bleed with the 7720 SE 900p display. I've had to turn down the brightness to nearly the lowest setting to calm my eyes, resulting in a dull image as a consequence.

Here is a picture showing my 7720 SE on the left, vs my 6 yr old laptop on the right. Top shows the Windows 'blank' screensaver with the display brightness set to minimum. Lower half shows trying to play a dark-ish game on this laptop with the brightness turned up to about 25% on the 7720 SE (50% on the old laptop), annoyingly bright. And the panel is indeed a AUO159E...

I must admit I expected better for this powerful laptop. I don't know if I can tolerate this display for a few years. I hadn't realised it was like this until I recently decided to play the odd dark game and watch some dvds. Is this the same for everybody or am I the proud owner of a problem panel?

Cheers!

So I was not going to reorder this machine after returning my old one however I could not really find any comparable systems that were a good deal. I looked at some HPs and they all felt very cheap. I ended up getting the 17R SE with i5 3230m, 1080p at a discounted price after several complaints and threats to close my DPA account.

My new system has no backlight issues (well there is a teeny tiny, but barely noticeable spot on the lower right, but I would not have noticed it if I was not looking for problems). The 1080p panel that I have is CMN1720, which I think is a Chi Mei panel, and it is great. No strain at all on my eyes.

So far I have not experienced any issues the new system, I wonder if Dell is beefing up the quality control after receiving too many complaints. If you are still within your return window I would return any machine with the 900p AUO display, I think the base 17R SE no longer has that 900p display anymore, plus the i5 is a 3230 instead of 3210. Not really a big diff processor wise, I think just 100 MHz clock increase.

Oh but the base HDD is 750GB as opposed to 1TB, really was not a big deal for me since I store most of my stuff on my home server.

bad news guys, on my own thread, a replacement cannot be made. Apparently even you have successfully tag transferred your service tag to another country but your warranty has a RTD (return to depot) limitation.  Then your warranty is out on the drain.  Its like having a "no warranty at all"  something I dont have knowledge at all.   Unfortunately for me, end of the line, either keep this or change the screen on my own.  But Im leaning over changing it to Full HD will cost about 130USD here.  Thanks alot guys!, I may not have resolve this issue but atleast Im not alone on this LCD

I've emailed Dell Tech Support to see what can be done about this, will update if I learn anything further. Here's hoping. Talk about a laptop which can give eye strain.. Shame really because it's a decent machine.

I've also noticed something else which is odd, occassionally the sound system makes a slight pop, randomly, as if it's going to play a sound but doesn't, this happens when I'm not even playing anything with sound. Weird one.

I also have a 17rse and the display is great on mine I have the 1080p version through. The build quality isnt the greatest through as my hinges have started groaning and creaking recently and now my Skype crashes upon opening it. Another thing I noticed is that when I play some games the fps jumps like it will run super high one moment and then go wayyyy down to like 10 the next.
