Yes it will work. But remember the RAM will clock down to the lowest denominator, meaning that If you have the 1GB stick and one PC2700 stick in then they will both run at 266MHz, not at different speeds. That having been said (and I'm sure you realised that from what you posted.... I was just making sure), it will work quite fine until you can afford the PC2700 stick. Good luck.

Thanks; I actually have the 8600 with two 256MB PC2700 sticks, and wanted to replace them with two sticks of PC2100 (512MB each)...possible?

Also, any other GPU + CPU temparature monitoring utility out there aside from fangui, or is fangui still the one to use?

Thanks; I actually have the 8600 with two 256MB PC2700 sticks, and wanted to replace them with two sticks of PC2100 (512MB each)...possible? Yeah, its possible, should work 100%. Of course having 1GB of PC2700 would be preferable, but hey, no biggie.

Also, any other GPU + CPU temparature monitoring utility out there aside from fangui, or is fangui still the one to use? There are others (such as Sandra), but fanGUI is really the best for Inspirons as it is accurate and has the extra features, Make sure you have the latest version (2.2.0), as it fixes the swapped GPU/RAM temps on the i8600. http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/

Good luck

Interesting side note - 2x512MB PC2700 in the Inspiron 8600 runs at a frequency of 99 MHz;

As compared to        - 2x512MB PC2100 in the Latitude D800 runs at a frequency of 133 MHz.

Both machines are using matched RAM, and the readings were taken on CPU-Z version 1.2.1.

Possibly explains why my D800 did slightly better in memory speed tests under memtest86...

That is rather unusual..... the PC2700 should be running at 166MHz I would have thought.... have you measured it with any other programs? Just to make sure?

Probably because the PC2700 is mismatched....one Hynix stick & one Micron/Crucial stick...I just checked...

Take one out, and try each separately, see what speed they run at then. One might be defective or something.... just mixing brands shouldn't do that.

The Hynix by itself runs at 166Mhz...the Micron/Crucial runs at 99MHz...I guess together they default to the lowest speed setting...I've had good luck with Crucial/Micron in the past, I've called to have the offending piece replaced tomorrow.

Nice specs on your new machine; let me know if you need a DVDRW+ drive or a Truemobile 1300 sent to you, we have several spare units lying around.

Yeah, I thought it might be one of the modules running bad. Get it replaced and you'll be right as rain again.

I love the specs on my new beast..... had to opt for the WSXGA, CD-RW drive and normal Intel PRO wireless due to budget restraints though..... so even as much as I'd like that DVDRW+ drive & Truemobile 1300 card I'm a bit cash strapped right now . But it'll be worth it when I get this baby up and running (hopefully I get it by end of next week).
