Is it possible to put in some third party HDD into the laptop ? Apparently they are charging me Rs 7000 for a 160 GB HDD replacement which in IMHO is quite steep considering how the prices of memory have fallen
Thanks Nikhil.. So while ordering for a drive, what exactly do I need to mention ? Any specifications or will 2.5" SATA drive suffice ? Any limit of the memory capacity which the laptop can support ?
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 that is used for web browsing and checking email. It was still working great, but I wanted a low cost investment to bring it back to life. So $100 on the Samsung Evo 830 and $30 for a new battery is way cheaper than a new laptop. Alas, I had the same problem as you with the SSD and I just wanted to say THANK YOU. I folded up the installation manual from Samsung then cut it in half. Worked like a charm! It is unfortunate that it has to be "rigged" to get it to work, but I couldn't be happier and now my old 1525 is better than new! Thanks again!

Hi pratikshinde,
Swap the hard drive from HP computer to Dell Inspiron 1525 to check if the hard drive is detected.
This would isolate the issue to hard drive / hard drive slot on the motherboard.
Awaiting your response!

Hello Rajesh,
I did as per your suggestion, the HDD from HP laptop is detected on my Dell Inspiron 1525.
I noticed that both old HDDs are of same thickness while my new WD5000LPVT is having lesser thickness.
Thanks.

At last it has been detected, after putting some pieces of papers to fill up space above the HDD.
Though it is a dirty way, I am happy that it is working now,
Please let me know better alternative.
Thanks.

Hi pratikshinde,
Glad to hear that the hard drive is fixed and now the computer is up and running.
The dimensions of the hard drive are smaller than the old hard drive.
For any driver’s related issue refer the below link:

Awaiting your response!

Hi hpant,
Yes, Inspiron 1525 supports third party 2.5”inch SATA 160 GB hard drive.
The hard dive in 1525 is customer replaceable unit; refer this link to replace the hard drive for Inspiron 1525: http://bit.ly/Sl1m5z
You can also purchase the hard drive online/local store at a cost effective price.
Please reply for any further help.

Hi hpant,
The maximum storage tested with Inspiron 1525 is 500GB. You can order for a 2.5”inch 500GB SATA hard drive.
Hope this helps.

Hi hpant,
Inspiron 1525 was not tested with SSD, however I did check on few forums where users have tried a 128GB SSD with no issues.
