inspiron 17r se wont turn on first time

Question

Hello there, i have a dell inspiron 17r se which is around 2 months old, recently when i turn the laptop on the dell logo will briefly show up then dissapear and it will just sit on a black screen. i then have to turn it off from the power button and start it again and it allways works second time. i had a11 bios version but when i updated it to a12 as per the dell tech guys request it still doesnt work. i have been told today by him that he spoke to his supervisor and apprently there is no fix for this at the moment and ill just have to wait untill there is 1. i fear this way of operating the laptop isnt good for it and from the research ive done people have been experiencing this problem since before the new year. is there really no fix after all this time?

Hello.

I had the same exact problem.

After extensive research, I managed to fix it.

Here's what I did...

-Power ON the computer.

- After the Dell logo, when the screen goes black, Power OFF.

-Then, Power ON again and Press F2 to get into the BIOS.

-When you are in the Bios, Go to the "BOOT" menu.

-Then go to "SECURE BOOT" and select "DISABLED"

-Then go to "ADD BOOT OPTION" and press "Enter"

- In the new window that opens up, go to "BOOT OPTION NAME", and type "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" without the quotes.

- Tab down to "YES" and Press Enter

- Now, you should see "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" in the list under "BOOT PRIORITY ORDER and UEFI BOOT.

- Press the "+" key to move "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" to the top of the boot list.

-Press F10 to Save Changes and Exit.

Your computer should now boot normally from now on.

It worked for me.

Doesn't work for me too because i cannot even get to the boot options page. It just display a blank screen with a empty loading bar.

Did you press the F2 on the 2nd turn on. It doesn't go to the boot screen or work on the first. I followed the boot set up instructions and it's now working fine. There is another thread knocking about suggesting that Dell will put another motherboard in to cure the problem, if under warranty. Don't know if any of this helps.

Hi AC-NSB,

I'm having the same problem but with an XPS 13 (the screen goes black on start-up, I have to power down by hitting the power button and restart again. 2nd is always works) . I don't have a CD/DVD drive so do you think the same solution will work my computer?
