Dell Studio xps 1640 black screen but keyboard lights up

Hi I have had my Dell studio xps 1640 for around 2 years now, apart from the common overheating problems has been working fine.

Last night i powered down as usual after watching some live stream football, this morning went to start up again and the keyboard lights up & can hear the fan running but getting completly blank, black screen. It seems windows isnt loading up either as if i push the power button again it shuts down instantly.

I have always kept the inside clean and free of dust and really need to know what may need repairing. Could it be a Graphic or video card or Motherboard problem. If anyone has had this problem before, please get intouch so i can get to the root of the problem and get it repaired... If even possible!!!

I have also tried the useual checks of memory but have not tried to get display via vgi or hdmi in to another monitor.

Hi Scott Waterman,

Welcome to the community.

It appears to be a no video situation with the system. The instructions in the link below would be helpful in resolving this issue:

Hi petjelly,

Welcome to the community.

I would like to inform you that if the external monitor is also not getting the display then it would seem video card of the system has gone faulty.

You can check if your system has active warranty on the below link:

There's no video card in the system - if the video chip has failed, you will need a replacement mainboard.
