I actually just bought the laptop. The weird thing is that the speaker works fine in Dell diagnostics, but not in Windows. Seems like a software issue to me. I tried multiple Sigmatel drivers with no success.
I did download that driver, but still is not working. Like I said the speaker works in Dell diagnosics, but not in Windows XP. Any other suggestions I would appreciate.
I appreciate the time and effort that you took to troubleshoot the issue. As speakers works outside operating system it seems like a software issue on the system.
Please post a screenshot of the device manager of the system so we can check the details. Also, let us know what software did you install after windows installation.
Clear the Startup programs following the steps below:
Click on start
For XP Click on run and type msconfig
For Vista Click on start search box and type msconfig
Click ok or press enter in Vista.
It will bring a new window system configuration utility
Click on the startup tab then click on disable all
Click apply. Click close.
It will prompt to restart click on restart and system will be restarted without any background programs.

Okay. I would appreciate it if you mark my first reply as the Verified Answer. Might help somebody later when a Dell newbie gives an erroneous answer about this issue.
I did install the audiovox sigmatel driver and got it working out of the speaker, but headphone and built in microphone does not work., but the plug in microphone jack does. I am assuming I have a bad sense pin
Its great to hear that after installing Sigmatel drivers speakers are working fine now. It seems audio ports require replacement on the system.

Hi Chris,

It seems like a software/driver issues. Kindly download and install the audio driver from the link below:
XP:
downloads.dell.com/.../R171789.exe
VISTA:
downloads.dell.com/.../R171788.exe
Please perform these steps and let us know the results, so we can advise you further.

The sound Driver will not work without Chipset and DSS being installed. Then the Sigmatel Drivers.
