I also have the same model as MikeDsDell and Jimco, or the one in the picture Jimco posted.  Same EXACT issue.  It's like the mic picks up vibrations ie tapping anywhere on the frame but no voice.  This can't be a driver issue.  I doubt drivers distinguish between a tap and voice.  I'm not going to take my laptop apart either unless its very simple, but with this being in the screen, I don't think it's an easy fix.

My laptop is also new and under warranty, should I send back?

You could contact Dell about getting warranty service or you could wait for Dell_Amogh G to reply again in this thread. He can initiate the warranty service but I don't know when he will be back.

Note that Dell Support might require you to do further testing before they approve any repairs. One kind of test is to restore the laptop to the original factory configuration. If the mic was originally working with that configuration but no longer works when it is restored, then a hardware failure has occurred since the laptop was shipped from the factory..

 Hi emg_Tumba/ MikeDsDell,

As suggested by jimco, you may try restoring the system back to factory settings. Please refer to the link: http://dell.to/16exDDb.

* Note: This step leads to complete data loss including pictures, music files, videos, documents and applications. Please disconnect any external peripherals as well.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist further.

The only thing I can think of that causes this problem is that the tiny microphone was simply put in the wrong way - its membrane facing to the back of the laptop lid or some protective foil to avoid dust/dirt wasn't removed before the mic was inserted when the system was built.

I used compressed air to blow it out, I think you are correct though, even the bezel for the camera looks off now that I inspected it closer.  It's not square that is for sure.

I don't mean to be insulting here, but Dell is not the company it once was...

If you had an external mic like this

you would be able to see the effect when you wrap some tape around the mic capsule to "mute" it : you won't barely hear yourself but

tapping against the mic body will be almost perfectly recorded due to mechanical vibration.I still think something went wrong when the system was built.

By the way - I just tested it with a mic similar to that in the picture.....

"I went through your steps.  "working" didn't appear under Microphone, but it did have the green check as it is set to default.  I can see the levels increase when I type not talk :( Its like if I tap anywhere on the laptop is can sense that very well.  But it still won't pick up my voice.

In "micropone properties" I don't have a "custom" selection.  However if I click on the Levels tab I have access to control both volume and boost.  If I turn boost down to 0 the mic doesn't register anything.

Where is the mic located?  This laptop is still under warranty and has barely been used.

I can't help but feel it isn't a hardware issue though.

Why would the mic pick up key strokes or taps on the bezel but no voice?"

Why did you quote me?

Hi emg_Tumba,

Apologies for the inconvenience caused. It seems that the issue is with system’s hardware and microphone is needed to be replaced. Please provide me the Service Tag and the name as it appears on the account via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation) so I may access your records and we will take it from there.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.

Hi DELL-Amogh G,

on Tuesday I bought a dell inspiron 15R-7520 special edition which runs windows 8. Im afraid I have the same problem with emg_Tumba. I tried to contact on Skype but my microphone isn't working. I found the mic from the control panel and it seems to be enable.

I also tried to record my voice, in a program which I don't remember where I found it but still nothing. I read the conversation between you and emg_Tumba and I am the same "situation" with emg_Tumba.

I wonder what the solution is as the laptop is brand new and this is really a bad first impression. I bought dell by choice, you know in Greece dell products are not so easy to find and I really tried hard to find it, and I wish not to regret my choice.

I wait your reply ASAP.

thank you,

bests,

dionisis

This doesn't work, it's NOT A DRIVER ISSUE, this is a case where the mic was incorrectly installed backwards.

Hi dionisis,

I regret for the inconvenience. You may try uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers. Please follow the steps below:

  • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen
  • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’
  • Click > sign next to ‘Sound, Video and Game Controllers’
  • Right click the entry listed under  ‘Sound, Video and Game Controllers’ and click ‘Uninstall’
  • Click ‘Yes’ on the security warning

You may reinstall the drivers from the link: http://dell.to/12rL8Zs.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.
