Hi rathomson,

I appreciate for the trouble shooting steps tried to isolate the issue. I recommend you to update the quickset application from the link given below:

http://dell.to/134uAft

With this the control keys should work. Let me know the status.

The problem is the actual control keys.  ie. CTRL ALT Delete. not the function keys.  I did load the latest Quickset, it did not help.

I connected an external monitor.  It did not solve the problem.  Besides CRTL ALT Del not working, CTRL X, CTRL V, CTRL C etc do not work also.

I connected an external keyboard.  All keys worked correctly.

Looks like the keyboard is faulty:
download CW1384A0.exe
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/ie/en/iedhs1/DriverDetails/Product/studio-1749?driverId=GTW03&osCode=WLH&fileId=2731094900&languageCode=en&categoryId=DI

run the file and create a bootable USB stick.

Boot the system from the USBstick and look for the keyboard test option

You need to read my original post.  I installed a new keyboard before I started this post.  It did not solve the problem

I downloaded and ran the diagnostic tests.  The keyboard controller test passed.  The stuck key test passed.  All of the individual key tests passed except the two CTRL keys, the Fn key and the PgUp and PgDn keys.  I tested the old keyboard and then the new one with the same results.

Sorry - didn't realize that you already replaced the internal keyboard.

If you tested the each single key via diagnostic tool - which is OS independent - and the CTRL keys still didn't respond you have to deal with a mainboard problem.Either the connector or the keyboard controller are the problem.I assume that the ribbon cable has been replaced in case it's a separate item.

You can easily remap standard keys like CTRL via Autohotkey.

A single code line would make the Caps Lock behave like a CTRL key =>

Capslock::Ctrl

and adding a second code line

+Capslock::Capslock

lets you toggle  Capslock on and off when you hold down the shift key and press Capslock

(Copied the above from Autohotkey - help file)

=======================================================

If you want to try it - I can help you - it's simple.....

A new ribbon cable came with the new keyboard.  The diagnostics that I ran said the keyboard controller is good.  The connector looks good doesn't show any damage so I guess I am stuck with a bad mother board.  Thanks for the help.
