It's probably best to replace both the screen and the inverter - it sounds like the bulb is bad, meaning you'll need a new screen anyway - and you should install a new inverter with a new screen (the labor to replace one or the other is the same, so it makes sense to replace both together).
The backlight is part of the screen - replace the screen and you'll replace the backlight. When screens cost hundreds of dollars, it might have made sense to replace the bulb (with labor, a $100 or so repair). Now, it's cheaper to simply replace the entire screen than it is to have just the bulb changed.
