You may disable the built-in touchpad by following the steps mentioned below:
Method 1:
Click on ControlPanel tile.
Now click on More Settings option from left side menu.
Old Control Panel Window will open. In Old Control Panel Window search for Mouse settings and click on Change Mouse Settings option from the search results.
Mouse Properties window will pop up. Now, choose None option from the dropdown list for Left Button, Right Button. Press Apply and then OK to save your settings.
Following this method you can disable only touchpad buttons but your track pad will be still in active mode.
Method 2:
You can bring up the Power User Menu with your keyboard by pressing the WIN (Windows) key and the X key together. The Power user shortcut menu lists the Device Manager, Control Panel, Command Prompt, Power Options, etc.
In the Device Manager, double-click Mice & Pointing Devices>Right-click the internal touchpad device listed and select Disable from the menu that appears.
Please reply if you have any further questions.

Babita: Thanks for taking the time to respond. For some reason, the hardware configuration for the touchpad did not give me the option to disable it. It was "grayed out". I believe I still need to install a driver. Kindest regards, Rich Locus

I have the same laptop and Windows 8 as "Rich Locus"
Unfortunately the options you describe are not available for the inspiron 1545
"Rich Locus"
you may try third party software (didn't test them - I need both: USBmouse and touchpad

Just installed and tested the new driver - seems to be working even though inspiron 1545 is not listed......
My Windows 8 was a clean install so there was no previous Dell driver installed

Great glad you got it working correctly. :)
I think you have more or less everything correctly setup for Windows 8 however if you have not already done so run the Intel update Utility.

So, Mikedenney, if I upgrade my 1545 to Windows 10 Home Edition, I should be okay? (Moving from Win7)
