Thanks for the help, will look into it. Meantime, I am not seeing an email notification option for replies to my thread, how can I track this thread please?
Oh, meantime, please tell me, does this laptop need a wireless card inserted to access the net via my router or does this laptop have an internal wireless card?
Hi, I tried Firefox and it worked but then I uninstalled IE and something happened, now FF cannot access the net so I reinstalling XP again, will let you know how it goes. BTW, I clicked on "rich formatting" and I am typing this message in the large window that opened but I am still not seeing the option for email notifs?
Still does not work, I am stilI seeing 2 drivers yellowed "Base System device" and "Network Controller". I am going to try to install XP again for the 3rd time now, this time I am going to download only the 2 drivers you mentioned to see if I can get the wired net connection back, meantime, if there is any other driver I will need to access the net aside from those 2 you linked to, please post? Thanks.
but in the Device Manager under Network Adapters it shows 2 entries:
1394 Net Adapter
Broadcom 570x Integrated controller
and under Other Devices, the Network controller has the yellow question mark, is this why I cannot access the net? I am running the cable from the laptop to my router. If the yellowed network controller is the problem, doe this mean the Broadcom I installed is the wrong driver? if yes, can you tell me exactly which driver from the link I am supposed to install?
Well, I am totally stumped now, I formatted the drive and reinstalled XP Pro, installed the chipset driver and restarted then installed only the Broadcom driver you linked to and restarted and still cannot access the net?
Ok, I will pick up on this tomorrow morning if I can still find this thread when I turn my pc on. It really sucks there isn't an email notif or tracking option here but have a good night and thanks for the help!

Hi mikehende,
Laptop needs a wireless card to connect to wireless networks.
Dell Latitude D400 was shipped with wireless MiniPCI options:
Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 - 802.11b Centrino
True Mobile 1300 - 802.11b/g
True Mobile 1400 - 802.11a/b/g
Thanks & Regards

Hi mikehende,
The issue may appear as the chipset driver may have not been installed.
Install the chipset driver first using the links mentioned below:
http://dell.to/153OpEg
http://dell.to/16Sttyq
Then install the network driver mentioned below:
http://dell.to/1112tZU
Hope it helps.
Thanks & Regards

Hi mikehende,
For wired internet connection, install the driver mentioned below after installing the chipset drivers:
http://dell.to/ZQJ4zg
The Network driver mentioned in my previous post is for wireless.
Thanks & Regards

mikehende,
Please continue with DELL-Manshu S
The 1394 is a firewire adapter, not wireless. Try How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Dell Notebook System Software, v.5.1.0, A25first, then Intel Mobile Chipset, v.7.2.2.1006, A09 and Texas Instruments PCI 7510/4510 Cardbus Controller with SmartCard, v.1.0.9.11, A03 or the rest of the drivers will fail to install.
This article may help.
How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control
Then, Adobe Test Shockwave and Flash Players with Internet Exploere and then with a non-IE browser.
