Whenever you connect the headphone with the computer, you should get a notification that the headphone is connected. If the sound is only coming through the internal speakers, the issue might be with the audio port. I would suggest you to connect an alternate headphone or external speakers and check. If the issue persists, hardware might have to be replaced.

I dont see the "custom" option, which is indicated in this page (step 4)
Hello. Dell no longer includes Dell Diagnostics on all models. I am sorry that the FAQ mislead you. I thought that I had edited it to reflect the new situation but I didn't, so will get that done today.
he test goes on and at the end there's a radio button to test Audio, which plays several tones through the laptop speakers. when i plug in the headphone, I don't have any sound through the headphone and instead the tones are played via laptop speakers only. Also I didn't hear any " instrumental piece of music complete with drums" according to step 2, in the link above.
Those were the PSA tests. They do not play music, just system tones. System tones only play through the system speaker which is why you did not hear them through the headphones.
About a headphone notification, some models might have that but I don't think most do. I could be wrong though.
I'm glad it is working now but if the problem comes back it could be bad hardware. Intermittent problems tend to be hardware that is failing but not yet totally failed.
yes, i have tried multiple headphones and an external speaker. all of them are working on other PCs.but they don't work when connected to this laptop, both in windows and in dell diagnostic mode.
I get a pop up window when i plug an external mic, into port 6 in your picture, which asks me whether I've connect a Mic or a Line-in. but when i connect the headphone to port 7, I don't get any popup window.
If this is a hardware issue, what piece of the hardware must be replaced?
problem solved magically! i had this problem since day 1 after i bought the laptop and installed the drivers, but it started working now! thanks Appu S, for helping me out.
Glad to know the issue is resolved. It appears that updating the driver did the trick. I would suggest you to keep the computer under observation for 1-2 days.
Please reply if you have any further questions.
