The laptop did not reach POST, and BIOS could not be reached as, on startup, apart from the activity in my original post, nothing happens, and screen is just blank and black.
I have also tried an external monitor (I replaced the inverter about 3 months back on this machine), but no luck.
hello again......i just need to ask you one more question ......after the pc is turned on, what happens if you tap the Caps Lock button .....does the light respond to the key ..........

Hi Watchspring1,
Check if the computer boots into BIOS. Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo.
Also, check if it boots into safe mode:
Also, refer the following link for adapter and battery troubleshooting:

I recommend running diagnostics (restart the computer by holding FN and Power button simultaneously) on the computer to test the hardware.
Awaiting your response!

Hi Watchspring1,
This indicates motherboard failure on the computer. We need to replace the motherboard.
If the computer has active warranty, I would arrange for a service on the computer.
Check warranty status: http://dell.to/zEE2Cm
Kindly private message the service tag of the computer. To private message the service tag click my User name and click Start conversation.
