Trouble with ClearType settings and 1703fp

Question

Hello, I recently purchased a 1703fp and really like it although I've noticed something odd when I experiment with the ClearType font setting in XP.  I find that with this turned on, and with certain font sizes, I get some ghosting on some characters.  The effect is like a pink edge to some characters (usually left brackets and 'o's).  I've experimented with the ClearType 'tuner' and have hit the 'auto adjust' button on the monitor but it's never perfect.  Shutting of ClearType improves things dramatically (yeah, I know 'so why not leave it off') but I'd just like to know what's going on.  ClearType does improve the contrast and clears up some of the jaggedness of many fonts but I don't like the ghosting. My hardware: Dell 4100 with the stock nVidea analog card (TNT2 32K). And since I've got your attention, why can't I rotate the screen with this video card?  I have the latest driver and the nVidea program but trying to setup a 'hot key' to rotate the display doesn't do anything.  Strange. Any clues? mike

To see what's going on start here and look especially at the first link in the text, 'What is Cleartype'. Basically the color fringing is an artifact of clear type, and as you suggested, if you don't like it you can turn Cleartype off.

Thanks for the link, I had a look and sure enough, you're right.  Thanks!  I think I'll leave it turned off for now, at least I understand where the distortion comes from.   mike
