DDM and Intel HD onboard GPU are only supported using an HDMI to HDMI cable.

Also: make sure DDC/CI is enabled in the U2413 OSD menu, under "Other settings".

Running Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.  No video card installed yet, just using i7 built in graphics.  Any ideas?

Right-click on the Windows desktop, and make sure you have the Intel menu options "Graphics properties" and "Graphics options". If not, you are probably using a generic Microsoft VGA driver that does not support the DDC/CI on which Dell Display Manager depends. Go to Intel's web site if necessary and download their Oct'13 Win8.1 graphics driver.

DDC/Ci is enabled.  Intel Graphics Properties and Options are visible when right clicking the desktop.  Cannot open DDM to use web update, because it won't detect a monitor.  DDM file version is 1.20.0.1360  .Net is up to date.  Any other ideas?

Two things:

(1) could be the cable connection (what is it?), make sure it is attached directly (no KVMs or extensions) and securely, and

(2) could be the Intel driver (what is the driver version reported by the Intel Graphics Properties sheet?), make sure you have the latest one.

DDM does not use ,NET and has no other software dependencies aside from a graphics display driver that supports DDC/CI.

Also: this won't likely make any difference, but you can get the latest version by holding down the Shift key while you right-click on the DDM system tray icon and select "Check for new version". On that same menu, you'll also find an option to "Save diagnostic report", but I expect the report will simply point at the display driver.

Here is the diagnostic report.

The display driver you are using - Intel's latest 10.18.10.3316 - cannot communicate with the U2413 using DDC/CI, which is required by DDM. This could be an Intel driver issue, but are you sure DDC/CI is enabled in the U2413 OSD menu?

Absolutely positive.  Just checked it again.

I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you. Sometomes DDC/CI support gets broken in a specific driver, but I specifically tested an Intel HD4600 under Win8.1 using the default and latest driver - 10.18.10.3316, the same one you are using - and the U2413 worked just fine, over DP, HDMI and DVI.

DDM support can be broken by a specific display driver build, by a bad cable or connection, by disabling DDC/CI in the monitor OSD, and over DP by enabling DP1.2 in some models. It seems we covered all those possibilities, so I'm at a loss.... The only other thing I can suggest is to completely disconnect from the monitor from AC power, wait a minute, and then reconnect.

Hi

Has any progress been made on this?
I have recently built a machine using Intel Core i5 4670 (HD4600 Graphics), a Dell U2412M display and running Windows 8.1 64-bit.

I've installed:

  • Latest Intel Graphics
    • Driver from Intel is 10.18.10.3345
    • Device manager indicates I have the latest version 10.18.10.3379
  • Latest Dell display driver
    • Provider: Dell Inc.
    • Date: 15/06/2013
    • Version: 1.0.0.0
  • Latest Dell PowerNap
    • This seems able to set my brightness to the minimum level which seems to indicate DDC/CI is working.
  • Latest Dell Display Manager
    • Downloaded ddmsetup1260 from Dell support.
    • Started DDM; was prompted to download the update.
    • Downloaded and running ddmsetup1437

I get the same message as @frustrated_user "This program requires a supported Dell monitor and compatible display driver. If you believe your system meets these requirements, try power cycling the monitor and/or updating the display driver". I was hoping the DDM could hook into the Windows 8.1 screen brightness control so I guess I have to use the monitor controls.

What I've tried:

  1. Powering off the screen at the wall for a minute then powering on again - didn't work.
  2. Powering off the screen at the wall for a minute and disconnecting the DVI cable, then plugging in the DVI and powering on - didn't work.
The DVI cable came with the screen; I don't have other cables to try out.
  3. My diagnostic report is below which shows that the driver is able to communicate over DDC/CI.
My monitor is compatible according to the DDM download page here.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid your U2412 is too old for DDM. DDM requires a 2013 or newer Dell model year...

I can see how the link you point to could be misleading, but the U2412 is nowhere mentioned and the "Compatibility" list only includes newer models like the 2413 and 2414. As well the diagnostic report you provided is explicit:

22:47:35.620......Discarding unsupported display: DELA07A.0FFXD32G513L on AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

Although your U2412M supports DDC/CI, it does not support several of the VCP commands required by DDM and included in newer model years. Put another way, I'm afraid the "discarding" of your U2412 that appears in the diagnostic report is deliberate, and not a bug or oversight.

That doesn't make sense as the DDM download page says it is compatible with my screen and does not mention that I need a 2013 screen.
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/dell-u2412m?driverId=YMF4H

Also using other apps that work with the DDC/CI protocol are able to control the screen brightness, colour temperature, etc.

Can you direct me to the article that says that the screen needs to be a 2013 model?

Is it possible to get more verbose diagnostics information than what is output by the "Save diagnostic report" menu? Surely the software should be well written enough to disable or hide actions that the screen does not support.

DeepSiGH,

We are checking on this. They stated that version 12 models are not supported, only versions 13 and 14. We have sent an email to the software vendor entechtaiwan.

The U2412M is the only 12 listed so we think that this is a mistake on the file library Compatibility section:

I think you quoted frustrated_user's diagnostic report but it's similar to mine, just the graphics device is different.

Out of interest, do you know what VCP commands are not supported in my screen? How do I find out what version MCCS and DDC/CI is implemented in my screen?
