Maybe your computer has also the hibernation setup turned on and after one hour in standby mode it goes to hibernation. In that case you will need to start it by pressing powerbutton, but your computer will come up in the state you left it (programs running etc.).
Closing the lid with standby disabled so that your computer can still run, is NOT a good idea. The heat accumulating inside while running, can seriously damage your screen in the worst case.
But the ibernation mode is disable, so it s an other problem.
About the over heating, i think that it does not change so much things if the lid is closed: indeed my keyboard is never warm, and all the heating is evacuated by the rear.
But thanks for this advice.
If would be nice if someone has an other explanation or solution to this issue.
I have EXACTLY the same problem: i close the screen, go lunch with some programs in background (like GetRight, ICQ, etc.), open the screen and NOTHING TO DO to reactivate it...
The programs runs with no problem
It isn't in Hibernation Mode because i don't activate it, and if i press Power Button, i can hear Windows's Shutdown sound
I upgraded my BIOS at A31 version, witch contain a VGA Bios upgrade too, without no problem solved.
Hi, if you searched the forums you will find that many other dell users are having the exact same problems regarding coming out of suspend and losing sound after suspend. Hopefully dell will come out with a bios update or some type of fix since so many people have the same problem. When my 5100 doesn't come out of suspend I find that when you open and close the lid a few times it fixes the problem and windows comes back up but not always. Regarding the sound issue I read that it could be if you are using a usb mouse. If you are, go to device manager and then device properties for your mouse then uncheck the "allow this device to bring the computer out of standby". The only real fix right now is to disable standby completely.
Hi and Thanks for your answer.
In fact, i use an USB mouse, but my screen won't turn on if also try touch touchpad... i tried to press everything :P
I hope Dell make a new BIOS quickly for this...
I set my power profile like this:
AC POWER: all never;
BATT POWER: turn off screen after 3 min., disable hd after 5 min., remaining options never.
In BATT mode, i left only ICQ online, i close the screen, go eat something, return to pc and open screen: NOTHING TO DO!
No way to turn on the screen!
I can only press power button, ear the windows closing sound and... power off.
Also with standby disabled, this problem remain...
Good question...
Where's Dell?
And the famous "TESTING" test on our notebooks?
I called Dell Technical Support in Italy for this problem: the operator make me change Power Profile to "Home/Office"
The problem remain...
I m happy to see that so many people had a look on this topic, that s means that it s a real, common problem for many of us..... :-(
After having trying many manipulation, I found on manipulation which seems to work : instead of using the suggested Fn+F8 (which does not work... in my case ) the "best" thing to do is to put the computer in stanby mode by pressing the power button, after having previously set this action in the power management section. And then pressing again to get out the standby mode.
Whatever, this is still a bad solution, cause if for exemple you were downloading, entering in stanby mode, makes you disconnected.... So I m not happy with it of course !
So now, I really expect from DELL a real solution (new BIOS ....), cause I did not buy a 1500 euros laptop to us it like if I was Mc GYVER....
So please DELL, show us that "As easy as DELL" really means something....
thanks to all people who read this topic, and were involved in helping us.
I will put here together what "solutions" have been suggested, tested and verified not correcting the problem:
- Flashing the shipped BIOS ver.29 to the latest ver. 31 did not solve the problem.
- Manually switching the output display device by pressing the + keys at the same time did not solve the problem.
- Changing Power Profile to "Home/Office" did not solve the problem.
- Getting the latest driver for the video card (GeForce 5200) did not solve the problem.
There was also the next contribution, but I didn't try it because I don't consider it to be a solution:
"Then my 5100 doesn't come out of suspend I find that when you open and close the lid a few times it fixes the problem."
By surfing the forums I have noticed that different notebook models are effected. For sure the Inspiron 5150 and Inspiron 5100, but also others.
I have googled the words "Nvidia Geforce problem screen stays blank after standby" and got only noise. By googling the words "Dell Notebook problems screen stays blank after standby" I got several hits poiting me to people having the same problem.
I think this is a good indication whom to ask for the fix.
Good work Badenser.
This afternoon i tried the Fn+F8 method but with no results...
Dell's version of nVidia Video Drivers is 45.85; at www.nvidia.com i downloaded 53.03 official ForceWare (Video Drivers) and installed it BUT THE GeForce Go5200 IS NOT SUPPORTED  I came back to A06 Dell's drivers...
What should we do?
I also tried to activate "Presentation Mode" option on Quickset application, and seems to work but i want the screen shut down if i close it to save battery... (I think "Presentation Mode" lock the screen ON)...

I have bought recently an Inspiron 5150 and have the same problem.
Flashing the shipped BIOS ver.29 to the latest ver. 31 did not solve the problem.
Is this anybody reading on DELL's side?

I found this link in Dell's KnowledgeBase:
<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
But it didn't help me very much. Or i didn't understand the "procedure".
Can anybody verify the proposed solution.
Thanks,
Badenser

I have called today the technicall support in Germany.
The helpdesk guy told me to get the latest driver for the video card (GeForce 5200). He sounded like it is a known problem.
And guess what: It didn't solve the problem.
:((((

My next notebook will not be Dell.
