You may completely uninstall and reinstall both the graphics drivers. Please follow the steps below:
Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen.
Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’.
Click > sign next to ‘Display Adapters’.
Right click the entry listed under ‘Display Adapters’ and click ‘uninstall’.
However, you need to follow the correct order (reinstall Intel drivers first followed by NVidia drivers) as the system is working on ‘NVidia Optimus Technology’. You may refer to the links:
now can't boot either display, after seeing error message on Intel display driver in display adapters. Clicked for windows to update this and it did so but not display is mostly black with flickering mouse cursor. Am now tryin to navigate safe mode to undo that but can't seem to actually boot into safe mode as you could in older windows..
Gotten out of the pit of doom that is safe mode now and have tried updating the NVIDIA driver as above as I believe the HDMI is driven by that?
Right clicking desktop and going for NVIDIA control panel brings error message that I am not using a display currently attached to an NVIDIA GPU. Any ideas?
Laptop screen ok (still not happy with resolution) but no second screen detection whatsoever.
Eventually managed to do this. twice rejected intel driver saying computer wasn't sufficient to run it, and had to go through several attempts of safe mode to regain my display again. It's now working, who knows for how long. The resolution is also still affected. Starting a fresh thread on wifi switch...

In safe mode (how hard is that?!).
Intel driver is back.
So display adapters currently states;
intel(r) hd graphics 4000
nvidia GeForce gt 640m
no error states from either, should I try updates to either?
