Hi Freakkriek,

Apologies for a delayed response as I was out of office.

You will need to format the hard drive to perform clean installation of the Windows, so there will be data loss. I recommend you to backup the data before you perform clean installation. You may remove the hard drive from the system, and install it on a External Hard Drive Enclosure with Integrated USB Cable. Connect to another system and back up the data, or you may contact any local technician or computer store who may help you to backup the data.

You may go ahead and install the Windows on the SSD, however Dell has not tested it not does it promotes installing Windows on SSD. You may use the Recovery Media (if created when you got the system) or Windows re-installation discs to re-install the Windows. Please share if you have them or not. If not, then share the system's Service Tag and Owner's Name with me via private message (click my username and then click Send a Private Message). I'll review the details and share the further course of action with you.

Hi Freakkriek,

Try releasing the residual charge from the system. Here are the steps:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the battery and AC Adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter. Try to restart the computer and check.

Also, run diagnostics on the system to confirm hardware functionality. Here are the steps:

  • Restart the system and immediately start tapping the 'F12' key to enter the 'Boot Menu'.
  • Use the 'Down Arrow' key to highlight the 'Diagnostics' option. Press the 'Enter' key.
  • The diagnostics will begin. Please note the exact error message/code, if any appears on the screen.
  • You may also refer to the video on the link http://dell.to/17DCL0R for more information.

Please boot to BIOS by tapping the F2 key on the startup and check if the hard drive is getting detected or not. Hope this helps.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Thanks for both quick replies,

I executed all suggested fixes from the first post but still no change. The diagnostic hasn't given me an error message.

I only put it in Legacy mode since when started in UEFI (with safemode on or Off) leaves me with a dell logo without any response.

I rebooted and now i get the black screen with the dell logo and that is it...

any further suggestions?

thanks for the help

Hi Freakkriek,

Please try the steps below :

  • Change the SATA operation in BIOS (tap F2 on start up),from Intel Smart Response to AHCI.
  • Save changes in BIOS.
  • Reboot the system
  • Go back into Bios (F2) and change SATA operation from AHCI to Intel Smart Response.
  • Save the changes
  • Reboot the system.
  • System should boot normally into Windows.

Hope this helps. Please reply with the results.

Hi Freakkriek,

It appears that the Windows are corrupt and you will need to re-install it. However, you mat try restoring the system back to factory state if it allows you to do so. Please backup the data as this process leads to complete data loss. Here are the steps:

  • Shut down the computer
  • Power On the system
  • Power Off the system at Dell Logo with “rolling dots” at the bottom of the screen
  • Repeat the above steps 2-3 times
  • Click ‘Troubleshoot’
  • Click the Dell Backup and Recovery icon.

  • The system restarts and comes back up, click Next on the Dell Backup and Recovery Screen.

  • The system would be checked to see if the smart repair option can fix the issue, click Next once this is done.

  • You will be prompted to select the backup to be used, click the factory image option or select from one of the backups. Click Next.

  • You will be prompted to backup your files, if needed do so by selecting the option Yes, backup my personal files (Make sure to have an external backup hard drive handy.) or select No, Erase my files.

  • The system goes ahead and completes the restore of the operating system. Click Restart when prompted.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to setup the system with windows.

Hope this helps. If the issue still continues, then you would require the Recovery Media (if created) or Windows Re-installation Discs to perform clean installation.

Please reply if you have any questions.

Well here is the thing, the "rolling dots" don't appear it's just the Dell Logo so it seems a Re-installation is required however
it is possible to perform a re-installation without losing all stored data???
I had one C-disk (used to operate windows), one D-disk (with all the data worth saving) and one ssd-disk...
And since i'll be re-installling it is it worth it to install windows now on the SSD disk???
Since i read somewhere a lot of people do that nowadays
In any case really surprised by the quick and well phrased help here
thanks everybody!!!!

Dear,

I have the same problem with my dell inspiron 7720 17R.

At startup the message "operation system not found" is put on the top leff side of the screen.

All the tricks above do not work although the preinstallation of windows 7 should bo on my PC.

What can I do? Somewhere, I think I need a startup USB of CD for windows 7, but I never made one.

Can you please assist?
