Today Dell China called me again and transferred new test version of BIOS to me!

The BIOS version number was T83.

The problem was solved.

So guys, please wait for the new BIOS update.

They finally found there's an error in their BIOS.

If you can't wait, you can contact me privately for the new test BIOS, but I can't be responsible for any possible problem after updating.

Thanks for everyone's reply.

Hi abitzsong,

I would suggest you alter the settings in the 'Power options' window to fix the issue. Also you may refer for more steps mentioned in the links below to check if it fixes the issue.

I've just tried the suggestions in the two links.

Link 1: there's no adaptive brightness option in windows 7

Link 2: I did that but no help.

These options appear to be used for time-dependent auto dimming but not for the Dell Intelligent Display.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi abitzsong,

I would suggest you to reinstall the BIOS and the Dell quickset driver on the system. Then disable the Dell Intelligent display. Please download and install the BIOS and Quickset from the links below.

BIOS                    : http://dell.to/16suT4t

Quickset              : http://dell.to/197xXU6

Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried both just now, and it's still no help.

The Intelligant Display is always active whether the option was checked or not.

Hi abitzsong,

I would suggest you to perform manual operating system reinstallation on the system. Please refer to the link below for the instructions.

Also, please refer to the Video in link below for installing the drivers in correct order. The Video illustrates the order for Windows 7 operating system.

Again thanks for the reply.

The fact is that I have my own Win 7 Ultimate DVD so I didn't use Dell Operating System Installation Disc.

I couldn't follow the instruction above.

Because I couldn't boot that DVD by UEFI, I chose MBR booting system instead of the default UEFI in last installation of win 7.

Could that possibly be the problem source?

Would it make difference to the screen if I use UEFI system?

Hi abitzsong,

You can install the Windows 7 in the legacy mode that should not cause an issue. The UEFI is being customized for Windows 8 operating system.

Hi RAVI

I knew that and I tried both.

I CAN install the OS without problem, but the screen backlight problem wouldn't go away on either win 7 or win 8.

I think this might be related to its driver, firmware or even hardware.

I updated the latest driver and there was no help.

I'm about to return my laptop because it seems this ugly problem doesn't have a fix. Believe me, I've tried all advanced configurations, uninstalled and reinstalled my video drivers, and disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS to no avail and much frustration. At least one friend of mine gave up on this machine after he saw the problem. Too bad, I was really starting to like this laptop. I overlooked this problem at first because I never would imagine there was no way of turning this "feature" off. Or is there any hope?

I sent my V5470 to Dell Taiwan service center for help, and they contacted DELLChina Office, which is the nearest technical support center, for this stupid problem.

After series of testing, they thought this might be a hardware problem.

We've got the screen panel replaced last week, and the problem wasn't solved.  We contacted them again.

This time they think it's a problem of motherboard.  There was a "switch" on Intel graphic chip for battery saving on V5460, but it's gone on V5470.

This problem might be a hardware error of the new design, so they're trying to replace the motherboard now.

I'll report if there's some new finding.

Hi, I'm from Brazil. I have the same notebook with this problem. Any news, because dell Brazil has not answered me.

The technical support centre replied today.

They replaced the motherboard and they was no improvement.

They gave up and called me to get my computer back.

They tried to convince me that I wouldn't need such a contrast to read.

But, hell, this is not about the contrast, it's about the absolute brightness!!

They'll report this to dell headquarter and discuss what to do about this.

This is an stupid error in designing, testing and QC.

Buying this notebook isn't recommended now.

I'll try to return it.

Dell the company should be responsible on this.
